First time fishing Strawberry from a boat on Saturday and I think we had a pretty good day fishing. Weather was perfect when we launched at about 8:30 from Soldier Creek side. We nailed 2 quick fish slow trolling black and olive wooly buggers coming out past the buoys on a right hand turn with the intention of hitting the narrows looking for some kokanee.
We never did quite make it that far as we started hitting fish in about 90-100 feet of water about 100 yards from the north shore halfway to the narrows. Trolled that stretch several times with fish hitting about every 20 minutes or so. Tried quite a few things in the tackle box, slow trolling a worm seemed to be the most productive.
Several times we threw on pop gear with a pink squid and we did hit a couple of kokanee on that rig.
Wind switched to out of the north in the afternoon and we decided to head back towards the ramp to head out. About 100 yards from the ramp the battery finally gave on the trolling motor and I was forced to yank on the outboard which I have not had a lot of confidence in. After about 5 pulls it started right up and as soon as the cold blooded beast wanted to play we made it back to dry land. Still learning the ropes on this new boat and not taking any chances when the wind kicks up.
We ended up with six nice bows and a couple good kokanee, having release 5 or 6 slot cutts. My friends son seem to have the mojo and was hitting about 2/3 of the fish landed on worms. I think it was from him using significantly lighter line on his pole than we were. He had a ton of fun and in the end that made the trip memorable.
