Hello Everyone,

I am new to the board and have come to find out in the last year or so that I may be a horrible fisherman. My 7 year old son is really getting into it but gets frustrated as we stand there and catch nothing while people near us seem to be successful.

Anyway, I am taking him to the South Fork of the Ogden River this weekend. Any advice for the area so his view of his father as a man doesn't diminish further?

Spinfishing- try a med sized panther martin , bluefox, or floating rapala. Fish in the deeper holes, around log jams, and big boulders. Make sure the blade on your spinner spins.

Baitfishing- Half a nightcrawler on a size 6 baitholder hook with a small splitshot. You want your bait to drift along the bottom of the river. You should feel the bottom and hang up here and there but just pop the bait free and feel for bites. Fish it with some slack in the line to help the bait get to the bottom. Cast upstream or across upstream. when your bait stops drifting your either have a fish biting or a hang up. Fish the same areas as mentioned above.

These are just general techniques that work on rivers and streams. I've never fished the south fork, but I'll bet these techniques will work.

Good luck!

I used to fish south fork all the time. Had the best luck using a worm on a split shot as mentioned above. I would usually add a powerbait pellet or marshmallow to float it off the bottom- less snags. If south fork does not pan out there is always Causey up the road- fishing from the bay by the boy scout camp usually produces some fish pan sized trout, occasionally a kokanee.

Hopefully the water is still cold enough that you don't have tubers coming down the middle of your fishing holes.
