I would love some advice on fishing deer creek. What you recommend and where to fish on that lake?
I can do boat or shore fishing and would love advice on either. THANKS!!

what kind of fish are you after?

Well, Largemouth bass, Crappie, and Perch are all on my bucket list of fish to catch
and everything else i'm game for I just want to catch some fish!
This is actually Hoola bobs wife, he is gone until Thursday fishing red fleet and surrounding lakes. So I'm just planning this weekends trip myself!

Try the charleston area and look for structure. The fish will be hiding there.

If you get bored fishing for bass and you want to try for some trout, a rapala trolled behind the boat can't be beat. 50-100 yards off shore going about 2.7 mph.

I fish DC from a tube mostly and a boat sometimes.
I'd choose a different lake to target Large Mouth and Perch -- although they can be found they are not a common catch.
Trout, Small Mouth, Crappie, Walleye are better targets.
For trout I've found wedding rings and worm or flies to be the best.
For Small Mouth I like jerk baits and popping. I'm still working on my senko techniques.
I'm not a walleye expert but I do catch them there looking for both the other species.
The same with Crappie. They end up on my lines from time to time.
I used to catch Perch about every morning up there, but that was three years ago.
I will catch a Large Mouth on the Small mouth techniques about once every other trip.
I fish both the charleston and wallsburg areas.
Go on a weekday. Go Early and expect to be driven off the lake by the Power Squadron by 10am. Expect that and you won't be disappointed.
Either that or go on a horrible weather day.

Agree with the above posters. Trout are fairly ubiquitous, and I've caught them recently trolling pretty fast with plugs, rapalas and what not. Some of these trout are pretty big, I've recently been getting a few around 18":
Lots of smallmouth in this lake, mostly smaller these days, however. I've done well this time of year in the shallows with tube jigs rigged Carolina style, though the techniques mentioned by masterdaad are good too. Once in awhile I get a largemouth doing this, but not many.
The perch seem to be on the bottom of the typical yellow perch boom/bust cycle and are not as prevalent as they once were. The walleye (in may case) have been a little harder to come by, but I catch them sometimes on bottom bouncers and jigs.
I'd recommend going after the trout or the smallies for fast action, and yes, by 10 AM its a zoo out there. Start early, get off early. Good luck!

I have rather unusual habit of fishing both from my kayak and being underwater a fair amount at DeerCreek. Here is what I saw underwate last week. The Small Mouth were in small schools of 2-6 in 15-20 feet of water. You need to pound the shore where there are rocks to find them. But do not stay in one location since a lot of water is void of life. The carp are large and patrolling the shores in 5-10 feet of water. The walley were in 20-30 feet of water and around the rock piles that were about the size of your head. The area around the island is consistantly a producer for trout, and walleye. As stated by other posts, you have a choice either go early or late. The tennage traffic is significant.

Nice...sounds like you're a diver? What is your opinion on the walleye population in Deer Creek?
How about the smallies, all small? Prevalent?
thanks!

Best time to fish deer Creek is after dark throwing crank baits and plastics along the shore line and around the island if there is an island this year. I have picked up some nice eyes, SMB and both brown and rainbow trout in the past. When I fished it, I would head out just before dark and fish until midnight or so depending upon the bite. A walleye strike on say a perchscale shadrap will deffinately wake you up as they seem to like to follow the bait up to the boat and hit it just before you are ready to lift your bait out of the water. Good times especially on full moon nights. [fishin]

Hey Thanks Packfan, did you find the fish in shallow water at night, or in deep water? How long since you've been doing that nighttime technique at DC? I've managed a couple of eyes lately around dusk, but pretty darn slow in my case.
Might have to try that nigttime thing...Thanks.

I still fish after dark but I have changed locations to Starvation. We leave our trailer down there all summer. It started at Yuba years ago leaving the trailer there from March to end of July, when the walleye fishing took a dump I moved it to Deer Creek for a few years, when that fishing started to slow down we moved to Starvation. Yuba had very few fisherman cranking for walleye after dark. Deer Creek had a few regulars out after dark with some fishing all night for the eyes. Starvation has few night fisherman after dark but most of them clear out by 11 or 12. There is an all night tourney held at Starvation every summer, I think this year it is around the 12th of July. If interested get in touch with Wet1 or Mike4Cobra I believe they fish it. I know there are some other BFT'RS that fish it as well but can't remember their names. When I fished the eyes after dark in Deer Creek I fished from the State park up past the island, casting into and parallel to the rocks and shoreline. [fishin]

Wow, thanks Packfan! I like Starvy too. Even got some rookies into some walleye up there last year. Sounds like you arent too hot on DC anymore... Do you think the DC walleye fishery is in a bust now?

I really don't know I haven't fished it for a few years. I also didn't care for the Power Squadron there. Don't seem to have as much of a problem with the power squadron at Starvation, Allen and the other Park Rangers there keep a pretty good eye out on boaters to help insure safety for everyone. I have always thought that the walleye at Deer Creek put up a better fight and were a nice color compared to the other lakes and Res. in the state.

Concur on that, many of the DC boaters dont seem to be aware of etiquette.
Thanks.
