I was out in the river Saturday, looking down trying to pick my next step when this huge sucker fish came racing upstream 2 1/2 feet in front of me. Right after it passed me I see it trash its head and split in two. What I then realized was that it was a brown trout trying to rip a bite off of a 3 1/2 long bull snake. When it released the snake the snake rested on the bottom a few feet from me.The flesh of the snake was still pink, so it had not been in the river too long. The snake had no head. So here is where I need help, where can I find the material to tie one of these? Do I use multiple hooks or just get a gaff and do they sell dubbing and other material in bulk? That is in the Top Ten amazing things I have seen while fishing and hunting.

A brown chewing on a snake doesn't surprise me at all, but are you saying that he bit the head off the snake? I'd find that hard to believe without seeing it.

Or are you saying someone cut the head off and threw the snake in the river and then the fish picked it up?

Or perhaps the fish swallowed part of the snake and it's stomach digested the head and then it spit the rest out? I guess I could see that happening too.

I'm not doubting your story (and it is an awesome one), just trying to understand what happened.

Sounds like instead of taking fly tying classes, one had better go to taxidermy school. [Wink]

Hey That's a cool story. Ha Ha I wonder if that Brown Chomped that snakes head off... wouldn't doubt it. Browns are awesome! When I fished the Owyhee in early spring, I couldn't get a take.. I was fishing 6x and matching the hatch with a #22 griffith's gnat. I was later told that you literally have to have flourocarbon tippet or they can see your leader, when matching the hatch anyhow.. Good luck with your snake patterns?. My favorite Streamer for Browns is an Olive Bunny Fur Conehead Sculpin. That was my go to fly when I lived in Livingston, MT on the Yellowstone. Some BIG Browns in that country.. You could tie 6 of them together for a snake....

Yeah, the brown did not bite off the snake's head. Somebody had to have cut it off.

I have tied Snake flies before. Just material the really moves nice. Zonker strip with a Muddler style head. Using a Steelhead Stinger set up, you can make one a foot long. I Use 30 lb mono to connect the stingers.
