I am headed to the Gorge in 2 weeks and have never caught a mac over 5 lbs. I have only caught them while trolling for kokes.
I hear jigging is best?
I have never caught a double digit trout and could use a few pointers to hopefully help make it happen.
I will be in a boat in the Lucerne/Pipeline area.
Any help is appreciated and I promise not to keep any big macs, only pictures.

If you can not find all white Flat fish go to Home Depot and get a spray can of Plastic coat in white and paint any F-7 or F-5 Flat Fish all white. Let dry for 24 hr. Then put your new Mack killer to the test. I promise you will catch Lake trout ! [/font]

If jigging, use fresh sucker meat. Never leave home without it. Put your time in, and double digits it will come.

I have some huge flatfish and Rapalas I inherited from my grandpa 20 years ago after he passed away. I do not remember him fishing the Gorge but in his honor next weekend it is time to get them wet.
I would sure hate to lose them but I don't want him to be pissed at me for not using them either.
I don't really want to paint them though.
I think I will keep the downrigger ball about 10' off the bottom and see what I can drag up.
What speed do you guys recommend?

if you fish 10 feet off the bottom you won't catch them. I usually set my down rigger at 5' or less off the bottom and run your rig 25' behind your downrigger ball. be prepared you will snag up and loose gear but that mac fishing. also a gold a sliver dave davies pop gear with a worm 4' behind the gear is deadly.

I was keeping the ball 10' up figuring the flatfish would dive the other 10' and bump the bottom.
Sounds like I need to go even lower.

I don't think you will get down there with a flat fish. I've found the black and silver rapala j-13 to be the over all best lure for lakers as close to the bottom as you can get it. in 65 to 85 feet of water

If you drag your grandpa's huge flatfish around you will most likely catch a large Lake Trout every 2 weeks or 200 hr. of trolling! If you drag a small F - 5 white flatfish on the bottom you could catch one the first hour !

[font "Calibri"]Prior to finding out he was a big mac fish killer I hired Capt Steve Davis to take me and a couple friends out (no fish were taking off the lake so no one flame me, I didn’t know his reputation back then). As mentioned before all we used that day was pure white lures. To say it worked would be an understatement. Over a 100 LBS of macs put in the boat in less than four hours. One little trick I learned that day was downsizing your rigger ball. The heaviest ball he was running was 6LBS and two riggers had 4 LBS balls. He explained that even though you don’t get as accurate of a reading on your depth due to swing back, the lighter balls don’t get hung up as often. If you’re not dragging your balls through the mud you’re not mac fishing. As an example I typically have a 120’ of cable out when fishing a 100’ of water. This type of fishing is not for the faint of heart and most would say a little crazy but it works. Just make sure your downrigger clutch isn’t locked all the way down.[cool][/font]

For big Lake trout at Flaming Gorge, troll small white or pearl white flatfish on the bottom at 1.5 mph . Use F5 or F7 flatfish

Just recently decided I was going to give them a try on my own, so ill have to report back to you later. I did go with a guide on the gorge, and that is how we caught lakers. Steel line and a big old flat fish. Just the steel line took it down 100 feet to the bottom. It worked twice in the six hours we fished it so....Its definatley something I need to get tuned in.
