A sampling of fish caught this past week showed good numbers of bows ranging in the 2 to 4 pound class being caught off the west shore with Berkley Power Bait being the hot bait for many fishermen. These trout are not too line shy with anglers fishing mono up to six pounds getting bit all day long. In addition to rainbow trout there were a few Brook trout landed this past week as these brightly spotted trout begin to put on the feed bag.

John Randle of Los Angles hooked into a 4 pound Calaveras Combat trout trolling a CD Rapala along the buoy line off the face of the dam and also added a couple of feisty 2 pounders to his stringer. Stan Jackor of Tustin took home a beautiful, hard fighting 4.25 pound trout fishing with nightcrawlers in Sierra Cove and that was the same place that John Moos from Westminster added a 3.4 pound trout to his limit stringer using Power Bait. Dennis Carlson from Cypress was proud of his 3.35 pound Calavaras Combat trout caught on the west shore using a nightcrawler. RJ Holder from Garden Grove fished a nightcrawler and Power Bait combination to entice a 2.45 pound rainbow to bite and add to his limit stringer.

Limits are the order of the day at Irvine Lake. Jack Kendall of Glendora was fishing off the west shore with Power Bait and filled his stringer with four rainbows weighing up to 3 pounds and topped off his day at Irvine Lake with a fat Brook trout on the same bait. Nick Avemaria of Placentia checked in at the pro shop with a couple of 2.65 pound rainbows to round out his five fish limit while fishing off the west shore with chartreuse Power Bait. Red Mackey used Power Bait from the west shore to creel his limit. Maurice Arthur came from Vancouver, Washington on holiday and took a quick limit of fat rainbows using Power Bait along the west shore. Steve Crabtree of Playa del Rey fishing with his young son caught seven beautiful rainbows on a sunny Southern California February morning trolling all around the lake with Kastmasters.

LAKE LEVEL COULD START RISING NEXT WEEK
Mother nature has not been very generous with rain for the Southland this winter and water levels at most lakes are lower than normal. Even though good fishing conditions await anglers at Irvine Lake it looks like the lake will receive an additional flow of water beginning as early as March 1. “We are looking into the purchase of water to raise the lake level and open up the new 150 acre lake in the back of Santiago Flats. This area has been unaccessible for nearly five years and our goal is to allow anglers to access this prime spring fed fishery by way of Trout Alley. Big things are planned for the new lake.” stated general manager Dave Noyes.

For information, boat rental and overnight camping phone the pro shop at 714-649-9114

Questions, email JT Niemiec: JTNiemiec@aol.com

Thanks, Sean - bigfishtackle.com
