My son showed up for a surprise visit from his navy post in Virginia the other day, so we decided to do a night fishing trip on cutler. Good choice!

We got on the water this morning at just after midnight and after a short run we got our lines put out. It was nonstop action for the next 6 hours! Sucker meat was the preferred choice of the fish, we didn't even catch any on the liver or worms.

We had a big family get together planned and a fish fry is what the plan is, so we kept 16 of them. We caught them in about 18" of water and the sizes ranged from 15"-28". Several bigger than 24" and the average size was about 21".

My boys had a blast and wore me out! Fu, fun, fun!

BTW, I don't know how many of you do it, but the cats that are bigger than about 22" have a good amount of awsome tasting meat on their foreward bellies and heads. Been eating it for years, but don't recall hearing anyone else on this forum mentioning it.

Sweet report. Looks like a great night.

Thanks! It really was fun. Probably one of the fastest nights of catfishing I've had. Nice and cool too. Also, as soon as the sun came up it was over, just died right off.

Crazy night fishers! Quite a collection.

How did the bugs treat you out there at night?
Crazy??!! I resemble that comment[Wink]
Actually the bugs were no issue. I don't think I have a single skeeter bite.

Night fishing is the way to go. It is way too hot to fish during the day and the water felt as warm as pee. I think the fish go deeper and scatter in the depths during the day and come shallow at night to hunt in this heat. This make them easier to target at night right on those transition shelves because the fish coming into the shallows are in hunting mode and are definitely feeding. Just sucks to be tired for the rest of the following day, but its a sacrifice I'm willing to make!

Give it a try, it's peaceful (except for all the fish splashing on the end of the line).
