Just got back from a week-long scouting trip up Soldier Canyon in Stockton. Brought the boys fishing 4 times:
1) Settlement Canyon - Caught a bunch of 4-6 inch June suckers? (I think). Then I learned that they had recently poisoned the lake to get rid of crawdads, or something like that. Very low and pretty poor destination right now.
2) Grantsville Reservoir - First time there. Caught one small rainbow in about 2 hours of fishing in the morning.
3) Vernon Reservoir - Awesome destination. Very pretty. The fishing was hot. All boys caught fish and caught them fast. All our fish were caught with spinners, except one leader caught two fish on flies with his fly rod. It seemed that the fish would get tired of seeing the same spinners, then I'd switch one of the boys' rods to another spinner and within two casts he'd get a bite or a catch. Jake's Spinners were probable the best performing lure, and my son had a lot of success using a silver spoon with red dots. Vernon is my new favorite spot; it's far enough away that few people seem to go there. We only had two others on the shore fishing on Thursday morning. There were campers there on Friday, but none fishing in the morning when we were there.
By the way, I've taken my 12 year old fishing at least a half dozen times over the past year (hoping to make fishing the "bonding activity" for him and me), and this past week he finally caught his first fish. I was so happy! He likes eating them, too; which is a bonus!
Time to order supplies to make some spinners--hate to spend $4.50 for a single lure. . .
