Have a two battery system on my boat with 1000 amp cranking batteries. Need to replace one and supplier gave me a deep cycle instead of a cranking battery. I now understand that you can't use a deep cycle in combination with a cranking bat. Also, Mercury says to use only the cranking variety with an Optimax.
Can anyone confirm this?

Yes they told you right..It takes lots of amps to crank the motor and run the other things you may have..

I believe I have the same boat as you do. Mine came with one of each (starting and deep cycle ). The opti max does require a lot of juice!

Have you had any problems mixing two different batteries? I understand it creates charging problems since they have different construction. If you have one cranking and one deep cycle, do you run with your battery switch on both or just the cranking?
How long have you been running with the two different kinds?
