headed to Jordanelle last night - was greeted with a couple of car wrecks on 15 from pooling water...( dont they know they need drain holes in highway?)
.... anyway .....
launched at 6pm with nary a drop of water coming down from the skies.....had our trolling spread out and working by 615 or so.......couldnt locate many fish on the humminbird for a while, ziggin and zaggin through different depths. using different spoons, cranks, w / pop gear , dodgers........about a half hour in we get a hit on the lead core rod.....my buddy reels in one ugly son of a fish!!! we think it was some sort of chub ( wish we snapped a pic of that guy) - anyway it was bigger than the chubs i have ever seen , probably 14 inches or so ...pretty fat too....things stayed quiet for the next 30 or so minutes....the rain returned right around 730 ...and we finally started getting into the fish around the same time. boy were there some big schools on the fish finder ..... they were stacked up in about 50fow all through the water column. we ran some big figure 8 trolling patterns through and around the shools and ended up boatin' 4 nice rainbows in the next hour ( had some misses too) ... the rain continued to get heavier and heavier but we stuck it out as late as possible until darkness took over as we put the boat back on the trailer....

Fun evening of fishing ....we had the reservoir to ourselves other than one guy on a float tube working the area by the launch when we put in.

pop gear setup that was hot last week didnt see any action this time around - spoon , rapala, and kwikfish got em' this time - no real pattern was established but got a few in the boat....ill take it for 2nd trip out with the downriggers.

took a couple of bows home for todays dinner.....had to filet them at home since we could not figure out how to turn the lights on a the cleaning station!

no pics, the camera stayed in a dry compartment , boat was soaked before we even launched

My guess is you caught a whitefish. Sounds like a pretty good quick trip.

[#0000FF]You likely caught a chubosaurus left over from the formerly abundant chub population of Jordanelle. The smallmouth mopped up the small ones and the few remaining adults still spawn every year...but the babies are snarfed before they can grow up.

The same thing happened in Starvation. Chubs live to be over 20 years old but they have virtually died out in Starvation now. It has been two or three years since I have seen any or heard of any being caught.

Here's a picture of a 15 incher from Starvy. There are some that big or bigger in Jordanelle right now but who knows for how much longer?

Are there white fish in Jordanelle? I guess not really surprising, just never seen or caught one there.

[#0000FF]There are probably mountain whitefish above the lake, in the Provo River. These fish are native to Utah and usually prefer well oxygenated running water and seldom show up in lakes. Highly doubtful the fish caught in Jordanelle was a whitefish.

There are two whitefish species (Bear Lake and Bonneville) in Bear Lake that are found nowhere else in the world. And there are species of whitefish that live mainly in the cold deep lakes of the upper midwest and Canada. Some get pretty big and are fished commercially.

[#0000FF]Those chubs hit the same lures and baits folks fish for more desirable species...as evidenced in a couple of the pics below. Some of the older ones develop tumors inside and outside that really uglify them. We have caught several gross obesity beasties. But also lots of big ones without tumors. The last pic is one of the many chubs we caught through the ice at Jordanelle about 3 years ago. They seem to be declining in numbers now...just as with Starvation.

Glad you're having fun with the riggers mate. They can be a great joy and/or a royal PITA. But well worth the hassle. I might even try running two this weekend, just to add to the chaos and mayhem! Oh and LONG SLOW turns! Teehee.
