Does anyone know of a good place to hunt for night crawlers that you are willing to share ? I need to get a bunch to keep my turtles happy.

You can find them in more places then you can think. I always use someones garden and I water it real good so its muddy and I go out at night, I use a red light flashlight so I can see them at night. The red light does not scare the worms for some reason so make sure its a red light.

Since we don't know where you live - I'm recommending the nearest school, church, or business that has grass - look on the shaddy side of the building - with all the rain you can probably just drive around and look for them on the concrete. Reminder size of the lawn does not mean more crawlers - heck near my house a 4' wide track of ground near a packing lot usually has about 8 dozen when it rains.

Hint - use a RED light and it will not scare the worms and you will catch many more.

What I do is water the area around my house that doesn't have grass for at least 15 mins...once its nice a soaked...I use a old milk jug, fill it up with water and add half cup of Salt, shake it up, then pour it around that area that you soaked and watch all the worms come crawling out within minutes cause the salt drives them to the surface, repeat at another area if you need more but you can get atleast a dozen in one area...


Oh yea, you can do this any time of day...

I'm not suggesting you do this exactly, but a friend who was going to BYU at the time (many years ago) used to earn extra money by catching nightcrawlers at night at BYU by the botany pond, and sell them to a local supplier. He knew when they watered the lawn there, then just went in the dark and picked up grundles using a red light. I guess the security guys knew who he was. If you haven't done it before, it does take a little practice. The worms don't lie around and just let you walk up and pick them up. It's really quite sporting! [cool]

I agree with the red light trick, it's a lot easier than the old days when you had to hold the flashlight in one hand and try to sneak on them with the free hand! Head lamps allow you to keep both hands free to "double up" if your fast enough. Also if you get hold of a crawler, give it a squeeze and hold it for a minute before you try pulling it, this will prevent the worm from breaking.

When I was a kid we would go to the
Cemetery at night, after it was watered. we got a lot of Nightcrawlers. and would sale them. you can make a worm farm to keep them.
