Full Version: Piute Reservoir question

I recently found out that the bag limit for trout was increased to 8 trout at Piute Reservoir. With gas at around $3.80 a gallon and a 2 hour drive, is it worth the trip with the lake level so low? Or would it be better to wait till September when the fishing is better? The fishing report said slow fishing but I don't want to travel that far for slow fishing. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

The reason the limit was raised is that when the reservoir is drawn down to it's lowest point this fall, it will be treated with Rotenone to remove all the fish. Right now the reservoir is overrun with chubs. There are trout and smallmouth bass, but fishing is tough. The Division is just giving folks the opportunity to catch fish that are otherwise going to be killed in a few months. It doesn't mean they're easy to catch. (I'm not sure about that to be quite honest. Reports have been bad.)

If money is an issue for you, my advice would be to save your dollars and fish closer to home.

I fished Piute Reservoir one week ago ! Fishing was slow and the water was warm and off color!

Fishing was much better at Otter Creek Reservoir that is a few miles away from Piute.

I decided if I go that far, it would be better to go to Otter Creek. I much prefer quality over quantity as far as fishing goes. The average fish there weighs around 2 pounds. I hope by next year Piute will a better fishing destination when they fill it up. So much of the fishing holes down here are turning into mudholes with so little rain.
