Thinking of heading to Willard, with boat, looking for wipers, this Thursday. Any suggestions for success, time locations, areas to try, depth, speed, lure selection.

Look at the post from TinCan just a few ahead of yours. He has about all the info you will need there.

Anybody else think this will be another year with poor wiper boils?

I miss the good old days. And Powell.

Without fishing much out there this year to see how many shad are filling the open waters, I suspect that boil fishing will be similar to the last two years ... maybe just a bit better.

I'd love to hear what WiperHunter has to say about this.

Well FFM2, thanks for the plug...[laugh] I've been trying to figure out WB for 10 years now.
As I've told several people, Willard will make a liar out of you in a heartbeat. I can tell ya what worked for me yesterday, but sure as shootin, it won't work for me tomorrow, or probably anyone else. And just because of that fact, I don't mind passin out details about my latest trip, be it a great day of CPR's or a day with a boat full of skunks....[cool]
Uintaman, feel free to try anything and everything. I don't claim ownership of it, and sure won't promise any of it works for anyone else.

There does seem to be a couple minor exceptions to that. While Wiper can be darn choosy on what they hit on, seems like almost any kind of lure in silver / chrome and blue or silver / chrome & black with some other variations, seem to be a good standby, fall back lure. Including Sunday, the best bite I've had a WB this years was on one of these 2 rat-l-traps.

But then last year virtually EVERYTHING I caught was on this one.

So try anything and everything. Can't tell what they may be in the mood for when you are on the water.

It's not looking good for boils but the terns are diving and the shad have started showing up in big numbers, a few groups of shad are starting to ball up. The bad news was the water was very stained this evening and the water temps was 74* when we arrived at 4:30pm.[:|]

Yep, I saw Terns diving in ones and twos in several places last Sunday, and I graphed a couple fairly good size shad balls along the west area of the Openness. But nothing that was anything like a real Wiper boil. And like Curt said, the water temp may still be a bit warm. It was 80* at about 1:30 last Sunday .
Now the recent cool front and rain may cool it off some, we will see, maybe. And it looks as if it could be a nice weekend weather wise this weekend.

[#0000FF]This is the time of year the wipers are in full boil...if they are going to boil at all. The high water temps are not nearly as important as visibility. Muddy water from the wind-waves washing on exposed mud banks around the lake decrease the visibility. Schooling fish like wipers need to be able to see each other...and the schools of bait they are seeking. If they can see less than 2 feet in the water they have to rely on lateral line vibration alone. That is not enough for herding up a bait ball and getting a bunch of wipers together to chow down.

The terns are picking off individual small shad that venture to the surface to feed. Occasionally a wiper will do the same thing. But onesies and twosies do not make a wide open boil like we enjoyed during years of high water when there was good clarity. lots of wipers and lots of shad.
