Went back to Strawberry yesterday and wow, what a difference a couple of weeks makes. Fish are/were turned on!
I was on my kick boat at East Portal and had some strange things happen - I saw pods of fish porpoise (multiple times), Cuts taking my fly dangling right by my feet, Cuts jumping, Fish in 10 feet of water in the middle of the afternoon, and non stop action from 3pm to 7:30pm. All these things are out of character for the Berry. What is going on?
I had one of the best days ever, caught and released 28 fish in the afternoon-evening. Hooked over 10 more i did not land. Caught some big fish I never saw, either came undone or broke me off. Most were cuts with about 5 rainbows getting released at the boat. Not one of them had a green or orange tag. Dang it! I was hoping to win me a new fishing boat. [Smile]
I had a great day. Only got one good pic to show of a 18 inch fat rainbow. Wow, do they fight hard. He took a black woolly bugger. Most were caught on flies, mostly black, or on my white tube jig dragging behind me.
My only regret is that I can't go again this week. [crazy]
Fall fishing is here!

We left yesterday, but the weekend was much the same. I don't know if it this unsettled up and down weather. We had bad storms two of the four days.
The rainbow have some shoulders though. Bet that bow felt like a three footer.[Smile]

Last year I was catching fish down 25 ft this year they are on top.
will see if this holds up. I have very light rods and the Bows are fun to catch. jump and come out of the water like a koke. I forget to look for a tag. but the bows, I got mabe to big to be taged I put them all back.

I think it still is. I did catch a lot in shallow, but seriously, double that in 40'. We were in a group of five pontoons, all were doing very well.

Dang, man. Reports like this always have me going back to Strawberry and I never duplicate the success I read about. But that fatty bow of yours is unfortunately going to force me back up there. [Smile]

Where is East Portal?

What flies were you using? More luck on top or sub-surface?

Thinking I need to get some bows for the smoker.

Just finished smoking a bunch of rainbow fillets in the smoker using alder wood - just like the native Alaskans. Amazing stuff.
Like I mentioned, I only used a black leach pattern with some sparkle. Fast sinking line but not too deep. Active feeding fish were in the top 5 feet of water.
East Portal is on the west side of Strawberry Marina over by Bryants Fork. This is where they draw water from Strawberry underground to Diamond Fork drainage.
Good luck.

Haha, that made me laugh hard. I usually like to use correct grammar since many on this board don't. Anyway, SNL did a skit on "Da Bears" years ago and being football season and all it just came our. Sorry, it won't happen again. [Wink]

"All these things are out of character for the Berry. What is going on? "

A week of cold rain forecast for Strawberry, and snow just above the lake.

The fish know there is change in the air. It is going to be a long cold deep snow winter.

I hope. [Smile]

It has been a fun fall so far Strawberry. I had a wierd experience yesterday. I fish with two fly rods, one with type 3 line and one with internediate, I was using the type 3 and my other rod was across my pontoons behind me with the fly just dangling in the water. Twice I had fish come up and hit the fly. I would just see a flash and they would be gone before I could do anything.

Yesterday was really good in the morning. I moved over to East Portal in the afternoon and it was slower. Want to go back this weekend but the bad weather and a long list of Honey Do's will keep me away.

That would be a capital offense. Or at least should be.

Hey Mark, where were you fishing before you moved over to East Portal? Sounds like you have the same thing happen to you. I have never had the fish come right to the kick boat to eat a fly. Aggressive cutts.
Thanks

This time of year it happens often. Fish following a hooked fish too right to the boat, but I have only fly fished so this was normal to me.

Mark,
I was thinking of going back to Strawberry with my kickboat this weekend. I never fish the ladders. Do you go straight out? I know it is shallow over there. Do you go way out into deeper water? Any tips about that area are appreciated. I can give you pointers about East Portal.
