OTHER THAN A VARNISH FINISH THE ICE SLED IS DONE .
TIME TO REPLACE THE SPLIT RINGS AND HOOKS ON THE LURES , BUT I WANT TO DO SOME REPAINTING AS WELL .
A MODEL AIR BRUSH IS PROBBABLY THE BEST THING TO USE , BUT PAINT TYPES , THERE'S THE QUESTION , WHAT TYPE TO USE FOR THE SPOONS , PLASTIC LURES AND WOODEN LURES ?
PROTECTIVE FINISH TOO ?
WILL THEY NEED TO BE BAKED UNDER A HEAT LAMP ?
ANYONE HAVE ANY IDEAS ?

Must be nice to be able to work on your fishing gear. Management here has saved up home projects for the past eight months. The only varnishing I been doing is on the twenty foot closet with more oak and ceder than the state forest. It already costs more than a week of up north fishing with no vacation days. Still have to take down a bearing wall and make a doorway larger before spring. Some how I've got to hide a new rod in the receipts. Tight Lines

The good ole downtime would be the perfect time to relube your reels and free up those sticky bail. It is also a good time to respool or top shot with some new line and make sure that every thing is fresh.

YEP , ALREADY DID ALL BUT TWO OF MY REELS , EVEN THE LINE . THE TWO LEFT TO DO REQUIRE SOME EXTRA STRENGTH LINE FOR ICE FISHING . I FIGURE SOME 100 LB. OR 150 LB. TEST IS IN ORDER .
CAN YOU GUESS THE SPECIES ?

I was at meijers the day before newyears, and I was looking at their ice fishing stuff, (not much available this year.) any way, I had some time to kill so I looked further down the isles.

I came across a bottol of reel lube. twice the size of a bottol of gun oil. with a neadle applicator.

insted of it being a grease as one would expect, it was similar in color to gun oil and smelled similar to gun oil as well.

It is called Lightning Reel Lube sells for about 8 bucks. I was wondering if any one has used it, or is it someting new on the market? I did not buy any because I am using gun oil on mine now. and mine works just like the reel bottol says, fast as lighting. I cleaned all the old lube out of the reel and now I can use it in the cold again. not that I am going to use it on the ice, but I do plan on being on the river come trout season. some years I have had to build a fire opening night to thaw out the worms to get them on the hook. (no exaguration here)

i'm not sure . i was wondering if there was any info on it , acidic , non acidic , detergent or non detergent . usually it should say on the package , if not they are suposed to have a M.S.D.S. saftey sheet on all chemicals being sold , copies of the sheets are free and would give you some idea on how they would react to metal or plastic .

Hey Dave, I can almost bet that the reel lube would have graphite in it whereas the gun lube will not. The graphite will enhance the adhesion of the oils to the gears in your reel and increase the coefficients of any other polymeres in the base of the oil.

You probably know that graphite is a "no no" on a gun or rifle barrel. The barrels are open to the elements and can collect dust. The dust over time can lead to pitting of the barrels or even worse. Dangerous discharges and failure of the rounds being fired through the barrels. There is already a high amoung of friction in the barrel upon discharge. Dust in the barresl will increase this friction.
