It's been to long since I last posted so I thought I would hop on here and share a few catches from the summer. Had a couple good trips to the henrys fork, south fork of the snake and a handful of local streams and rivers. Hell, I even caught a bat! Haven't been able to get out as much as i'd like with work and dad duties but overall not a bad summer... Thanks for all the great posts lately folks! Fish on [fishon]

Very NICE Tyler.

Thanks for the kind words brother... I would have more pics but my phone took a dive in the river. Casualties of war i guess!

Nice fish! You are the only person other than my father that I have heard of hooking into a bat. That has to be an elite group of anglers. I just hope you had more sense than my father about the whole thing. He decided to keep it as a pet in his fanny pack for a couple days until it bit him when he was showing it off to some people. then the came the rabies shots and he had to put the bat down. It was actually hard for him. Like he really started to bond with his fanny pack bat. unbelievable.

Where on the south fork did you go? I got invited to go fish that with some local guys this spring and I have never fished that river at all.

So glad that bat story got posted. How random is that? lol Made my day.

Looks like a lot of great fish this summer. I've got to ask, is Henry's Fork as difficult to fish as everyone says? I've been wanting to make a drive up there to see these ultra selective trout for myself, but at the same time I don't want to take that long of a drive just to get skunked. [laugh]

Ha ya it was so random... he must have grabbed it out of the air on my back cast because next thing i knew something was flipping all over the water and tugging my line. I thought it was a tiny fish, nope...Bat! haha I was fishing the heisie bridge section... i don't know it very well but about 20 minutes from Idaho falls. its tough without a drift boat but certainly doable.

It certainly made for a interesting day! Henrys fork can be tough... I would say not my first choice if you want to catch a ton of trout, however the quality of fish is great. I would recommend you just move around a lot and bring a good selection of bugs to keep rotating them out. If you hit the south fork and the henrys fork it makes for a very worthwhile trip.

I just can't believe that there are people out there other than my dad to catch a bat. I thought it was a one in a million deal. I have spent quite a bit of time around heisie on the dirt bike but not much with a fly rod. Looks like I need to change my ways. Thanks for the post and the pictures!

A couple years ago while fishing Henry's Lake, I notice a black thing wiggling in the water. I went closer and it was a bat that kept trying to hitch a ride. I had to smack it off my boat with my net. But hooking one in the air takes skill! Or timing[Wink]

Bats will grab flies out of the air so it's not always random and not all that uncommon. That's more likely than just randomly hook into one. And don't touch those bats as mentioned as they do carry rabies.

Well now I want to catch one!

Looks like you had a good summer, beautiful fish you have there.

I've never caught a bat either, but I did have a large dragonfly grab my fly out of the air once. Oh, and I accidentally snagged a muskrat on a bead head nymph.

Is there an article on this? I can't see it being a common thing. Maybe more so at night. I remember growing up in Glenn's Ferry, we would go out at dark, lay on the ground and shine a flashlight into the sky. Bats galore swooping down to maybe 4 feet off the ground, but not to many in day light.

Ha well believe it! I was able to find the fish after reading the water for a an hour or so... I'm used to fishing smaller waters the like the weber and Provo so it had to change my tactics and as soon as I did fish on! I would look where the water was slower and deeper Maybe after a big Boulder ornwhere the fast water has created a trench. Lots of weight to get the flies down also helped! I also recommend moving up river from the Heisie bridge. Lots of easily navigable trails.

Felt horrible after I cut the line and saw it run off!

Looks good Tyler, nice summer indeed. I have had bats hit my flies at dusk but have never hooked one, nice job!

The muskrat put up a pretty good fight on a 3wt [Smile] I snagged him right in the tail. I didn't know what was going on (thought it was a nice brown at first), but then he got out of the water and started running along a gravel bar. It was a small fly with the barb pinched down, and I really didn't want to handle him, so I just popped the tippet.
