I'm not sure whether this qualifies for a story but let's try. Before the gill net ban it was really hard to catch a big halibut in the harbor. The gill nets got most of the larger halibut before reached the shallower water. In those days a big halibut might weigh 10 to 12 pounds. For that reason I fished with 4 pound mono. Yes it was dificult but possible. Once I hooked a really big one that weighed 18 pounds and to land it we had to pull the boat away from the fish which settled down directly under the boat, making it impossible to lift him to the gaff. The depth was about 10 feet. By pulling the boat away I was able to glide him up to the gaff, The boat had to be constantly on the move though and there were some harrowing moments. I applied to the IGFA for a record in the 4 pound class but alas there was no such catagory. I never use 4 pound anymore the halibut are getting to the 30 pound mark with no gill nets to stop them.

it should have gotten you one . shure is nice to see them regaining some weight , i'll bet it will be no time at all before a few of them become all time record sizes .

Mike: They did have a line class record category but it started at 6 pound. At that time the record for 6 pound was about 30 pounds. I don't know what categories they have now.
