What kind of fishing (and where) is good during this awkward time of year when things are cold, but not frozen? I don't have a fly rod, so I guess I'm talking for the spinning fisherman.

Depends on several things.

Lures or bait fishing....

Where you want to fish....

What you want to catch....

Shore bound or boat fishing....

Give us some more info and dollars to donuts someone will have THE answer you want.

Strawberry for Trout.

Mostly C&R slot cutthroat, but fun because of the number of 20" fish available.

Lost Creek is a closer alternative to Strawberry (depending on where you live) and the catch has been decent since they instituted a slot limit. Just watch for potholes on the road in.

Thanks for the replies all. Sounds like this is the time of year to go after trout. I'm in the Provo area, so I would love to know some good spots to hit along the Lower Provo, Utah Lake, etc. Nearby places basically.

I would also love to catch me some crappie or bluegill if they can be found this time of year anywhere.

Utah bg and crappie are far gone till ice season or during spring. If you ever want to catch bg or crappie provo harbor is great in the spring when they start to spawn.

This year I've caught crappie 7-11" and the bg were 8-9".
If you ever fly fish provo harbor for those species a #14 orange scud is the ticket for a good day.

Thanks, it was a nice fish and fun trip. Caught down in Texas near Palestine on the Trinity River.

Not quite a Sturgeon though. It's mouth was considerably more toothy than any ole Sturgeon. Hence the kevlar gloves and killer grip on the business end.

Alligator Gars have up to 700 teeth with the longest being 3/8ths" long.

I told my guide that if I got bit or otherwise hurt while handling and reviving this fish after the rod and reel tug of war to just keep filming and taking pics. We could doctor up later.

She, the big mama gar, cut my shin with her scales when she recuperated and wanted to swim away.

This is perhaps the finest hijacking of a post, that I have ever witnessed. "oh yeah, blue gill, uh huh, right, a few down at UL, trout, yeah, well here's a few pics of me when I took my time machine back to the Mesozoic period and wrestled with the assassin of the seas."

I still can't believe what I'm looking at. You sir are a man among men.

Ya, I apologize to the OP, Bhuij, for the thread going south. I suppose I could post something about this trip in the Carp, Catfish and Gar section. This particular specimen was taped at 7feet even and just over 200#.

So to bring it back home.

IF you want to TARGET Alligator Gar, You'll need to go down to Texas to the Trinity River. During August (when I was there) the air temps were around 110F and the river water temp was 90F. So both fish and I needed to rest a while before we got back at it.

Otherwise around here check the local reservoirs and recommendations given above.

Maybe I should change my avatar pic to one of me holding a CARP....that should cut down on threadjacking...heh heh.

Brown trout

Haha I was going to comment about the threadjacking because I thought it was hilarious, but I didn't want to come off as Angry or something.

In other news, played hooky from class today and hit the lower Provo, a short ways downstream from Vivian Park. Sure enough, the 1/4oz gold Vibrax upset a couple of brown trout. Took one home, the other bit, but got off the hook before I could reel him in.

Good man! You may have inspired me to play hooky from work this afternoon. There are only so many good weather days left. There will be plenty of time to work when it's too cold to fish right? Thanks for the pic and welcome to the forum!

I'm talking about real browntrout
[signature]
Brown trout aren't native to North American. Real ones are in Germany. Bet they'd make good bait.
[signature]
Nice Fish, BHuij! glad the thread got you where you wanted to be.

and (setthehook) ya, I suppose that is a REAL BrownTrout...nice one.
