Hi all,
I ma trying to get info on fishing for Burbot at Flaming Gorge this winter. I was wondering where the best place would be to go to catch some nice fish. Also, whats a good bait and lure. Thanks for the help in advance.

North end of the reservoir. 10-35 fow.

Jigs tipped w/ sucker meat. Tubes. Spoons.

Fish near the bottom (1ft probably max off bottom)

Let them eat your bait they mouth at it usually - they don't hit like most fish.

Any good spots on the north side of utah or you have too jump in Wyoming???

I don't want too buy a day pass in wyoming when I hit it this winter.

For most of the ice season, if not all season, you are very limited on areas with fishable ice on the Utah end.

You don't buy a day pass for Wyoming you buy a reciprocal stamp for $10 that allows you to fish for the calendar year. Gas is the much bigger expense. I like to spend at least two days to make the drive worth it.

Fish the Wyoming side, Lost Dogs and Fire Hole are good spots. Tip everything with sucker meat, tubes and spoons work best. But no matter what lure you use, a glow charge is more important than anything. use glow lures and hit it with a UV light, charge often, best luck comes right after charge and once it hits bottom go a few inches up and expect your tug, they dont really hit but will grab and slowly swim with it. south facing slopes... theres more sunlight on that water most the food source is in the shallows there for warmth and the fish feed off them, about 10-35 ft id say. fishing starts when the sun goes down for the burbot. hope this makes your trip more successful, save some for me!

I've done as well with non-glow stuff as glow.

Are you fishing at night? I haven't heard of anyone doing well for the burbot while fishing at night without glow jigs, so I thought maybe you were fishing without glow during the day.[:/]

Nope I don't fish for them during the day...

I think the glow thing just kind of got out of hand... I'm not saying using non-glow is better.... but some people act like as long as you are using glow that is all that matters....

Burbot eat all sorts of stuff from eggs, crawdads, baby smallmouth bass, small trout, etc, etc.... and none of those things glow. They seem to find all sorts of food at night just fine....without it glowing!

I don't know if anyone else has tested it, but I have... and I can tell you non-glow works just as good.

Some things kind of just take off.....like the myth that channel catfish prefer dead, stinky, rotten baits because that is what the eat... dead stuff on the bottom. Could not be further from the truth, channel catfish prefer as fresh as possible and the vast majority of what they eat is alive....

The catfish eat dead rotten stuff is a myth about as hard to kill as the burbot love glow lures one.

And if you visit any of the shops around Flaming Gorge, (even in Salt Lake), you'll see that the amount of glow lures / baits in fishing stores has skyrocketed.
I see it and just shake my head - what else do people use glow stuff for besides burbot? I feel like at this point it is the stores that are pushing this crap more than anything else...

There is no doubt other things will work for burbot, the thing about using glow is how far away can they see jigs without glow. In general burbot feed at night by feel but they can see, so jigs with glow will draw them in from farther away. Glow is useful with almost all trout lures when fished at 30 ft and deeper. The biggest problem most folks have is they don't keep them charged. During the night glow jigs need to be charged every 10 to 15 min or they are no better than any other jig.

I don't think they have problems seeing baits that do not have glow personally. They are very efficient at probing around at night and finding food that doesn't glow...

It might be better for some but I've tried to test it and I saw no increase or decrease in catch rates glow vs non. glow.

I prefer using rattle spoons and I bounce them on the bottom making as much sound as possible... that seems to increase my catch the most... sound.

i have good luck with glow or chartruese jig heads with a dangling night crawler on a couple poles and jigging with a glow 3 in maribou on jigging pole....hope this helps![bobWink]

Ice Fishing I always run two poles non-glow and they get action. I don't know if there is a huge difference.

I have hits on lures that are not charged.

I do know that hits are common after re-glowing/re-dropping.

Which might be the movement of the lure.

Next Time I go,

I might make a case study.
