went fishing today, it was fairly cold and I snapped off a rod tip 3" from the top, barely stressed it . . seems like i been hearing alot of that lately on the utah boards too . . Does cold weather make certain rods brittle and easily breakable? Or going from inside a car at 75 degrees, to real quick going to 25 outside?

i'm no expert but i would have to say probbably .
i work primarily with P.E.T.E. plastics , snack trey platters , berry containers , and the plastic sealed containers your lures come in .
brittle in the cold , extremely flexible in the heat .
ceramics will micro-fracture as will fiberglass in fluctuating tempratures too . ever notice an old coffee or tee cup with all the little cracks in them , years of hot and cold did it . same thing goes for the enamel on your teeth .
IM-6 and IM-7 rod blanks are made up of a multitude of these basic elements , so i'm guessing they would be effected by severe temprature changes .
i'm sure if there was a micro crack in the finish of your rod and some moisture or humidity entered it , the freesing would have expanded the micro crack into a fracture , thus causing your rods failure .

i cna agree there too when they first started comin out even with the new stocks made of some plastic, on the 22 marlin i believe i had a friend that got one, and it ahd cracked. down under the first part of the where the trigger is. {stock went onto steele.}thesteel,d got so cold then it warmed up when we got back from huntin abd setit over the baseboard heat, good and warm, it cracked then. i don,t like plastic or fiberglass nayways i think it,s a cheap way on doin stuff. gonna buy somethin mightsswell put the extra money in and git somethin that,s worth what your payin fer, or wait till ya can, it,ll be lastin longer, like all yor life. take careof it, it will.[

[green] sounds like you had a small frature on that part of your rod, I have fished with IM 6 and 7 rods for years, I find the more money you put into your passion the more use you get out of it, [

] pun intended, but honestly, cold weather will effect all of your equipment, even electronics, the best thing to do before your next outing in cold weather is the cotton ball trick the same you use for the eyes of your rod, rud it on your rods that you are taking and if you have a crack or a stress fracture it will show up by pulling the cotton off the ball..
[teeth] tight lines and bent rods.
