Have not read any recent posts on Huntington other than the blizzard last Sat. so took the boys down for the first ice fishing of the season. Temp was a balmy 2 degrees but the sun was shining (no wind until the afternoon). Parking lot was full so we blazed a trail down the steep side through thigh deep snow and headed across the lake in knee deep+ snow and some slush. Caught fish right off then nothing. Only caught 2 between 5 of us. They would come, look, chase, then leave! Caught on white gizzila, tried pink, white gizzy bugs, green gizzy, and another green and white (no interest at all). Beautiful day, hard work out, few fish, but had fun anyway. Hoping to hear how others did today. We talked to one other group that hadn't caught any but could mark fish on the finder.
Can't wait for ice closer to home!

Thanks for the report!

I should add we tried waxies (what we caught them on with smelly jelly), crawlers, power bait. 15 FOW, 12' was where we saw the most fish.

We went down that way today as well but did not stop at Huntington. We went on to Cleveland. It was a tough trail to break down to the ice behind only one group. We then went on across the lake over by the dam. We caught a few but I do not think more than those staying close to the road. We did have some solitude on the far side. We found 6-8 inches of ice with frozen slush on top and 4-10 inches of snow on top of that. We were lucky that when we went at 12:30 the slush was still frozen so we made it back across without incident. In the first photo you can see our tracks out across the lake. We then drove by E Lake just to see. It was capped with one Eskimo tent down on the lake. Talked to one BFT'er that had been down. He said there was 5 inches on ice with 4 inches of snow on top. He said they had fished Huntington earlier without luck and then had come to E Lake and caught a few. Great day, weather and beautiful scenery.

Perfect report, Brookie. Thanks for the info.

Nice pictures and report.
I'd hate to have to pull that tent back up to the road from E Lake.
It's nice to see a good water level at Cleveland. It produces some good fish when there is enough water for them to carry over.

I thought those guys with the tent must be young bucks. I certainly would not want to pack a tent back up that hill. You noticed we were tired at that point and decided against going down to the ice and packing just our buts back up the hill

We also went down to Huntington on Saturday but there was so many people already on the ice that we decided to go on to Cleveland.
HUGE MISTAKE GOING TO CLEVELAND! It was so hard going down the hill to Cleveland even with someone breaking the trail, and then going out onto the ice and stepping through, what seemed to be 4 inches of slush in one spot and 7 inches of sluch in another spot with every footstep, that it was completely miserable only catching 2 fish in 3 hours between four of us. All four of us had flashers and hardly even saw anything on them the whole time.
We packed up and headed for another lake. Did not make it there for two more hours but the fishing was excellent on 4 inches of ice. We caught 22 fish between the four of us in just over 4 hours.

Hey icerman,
I am almost positive you talked to us on your way out. ether way we fished Huntington that same day, we were going to go down by the dam but it was packed so we went to the middle of the lake just off the road and the snow was high! Ether way fishing was bad I had 3 bites and and only one of those turned into a me pulling a fish out of the hole and the other guys I was with didn't catch any fish.
I will say that it was worth the trip because it was super beautiful up there with all the snow

Yep it was me who you talked to. Too bad that you didn't catch more but I don't feel too bad now! Have been out of town trying to fill a cow elk tag and getting some repairs done on a tractor. No elk (saw lots of bulls), did get the tractor repaired, missed the big storm up North and left before the storm down South. Now hope to get some fishing in closer to home!
