Anyone have any info on ririe? Had family who checked it out on Friday and it was open... It's going to be pretty cold tonight, hoping it might be frozen now... Crossing my fingers.

If this cold snap doesn't cap it over then I don't think it will this year. It's definitely cold enough but Ririe is a fickle reservoir when it comes to freezing. Let's keep our figures crossed though. I'm dying to try and find some walleye now that I am far better equipped with a flasher and some jigging cranks.

I would love to find some walleye also. Would the walleye catching be better in the non ice fishing area. To the south? I agree that there is a chance that it could cap with the cold snap but it may not be safe on most of the lake. Last year there was a week of good ice by the boat docks but the other was varying in thickness to be safe. My gut feeling says minimal ice there this year, but I hope not.

The core temperature of the water in Ririe must drop before it can cap over and heavy snow mixed with wind will usually do it. That may have happened this last weekend and the reservoir may cap near the dam by the New Year. It has been three years since Ririe froze over above the powerline that crosses the res.

I think the walleye fishing is probably better on the blacktail side but if they are reproducing like fish and game days then there should be a few on the dam side. I wish they would open up blacktail side but that will never happen. I bet that side freezes up better too.

Checked it this morning (12/30) - no ice. It was twenty below. Zero ice.

I don't think it will freeze over. The lake is fuller and the weather and water has been to warm till now.
I could be wrong but it looks like one of those years. I would like to be able to liquid water fish with the boat and heater earlier in the year.

Last year it froze around those docks by the cliffs for about a week, one tiny little patch of ice. There is a group of fisherman, you know the guys that I am talking about that are die hards for those koks and if there is ice to be had I swear they would crawl out on their belly's to fish it. I got out on five inches of ice. I could see the open water and the ice was groaning beneath me. No bueno. Ririe is the funkiest lake for ice we have....keep your fingers crossed.

So if there is no ice, does anybody fish from a boat/canoe or whatever for kokes this time of year?

Last year I Jan at this time folks were putting in their motorboats and fishing. A few of the got tickets for not u to date registration.
I guess you could fish with a boat or canoe if you can get it up and down the ramp and can stand the temps. It is supposed to warm later this week.
If I could get my jet boat down and up the ramp I would go for it this weekend. Turn up the heater and tunes and fish away.

Just left there. It was 6 degrees. Lots of ice.

Well that's good news.

How Thick?
will it last with the weather warmer starting over the weekend?

Not sure of the thickness. It was frozen from the dam to the boat ramp with some small areas of open water. Looked like lots of open water further up the canyon. Didn't look like anyone had been on it yet.

I Stopped by today too and realized I hadn't bought my 2015 license yet. So then I was going to just check from the dock with my fish finder and see what the temps were and if I could spot any fish, but my shoes weren't really made for the deep powder so I left.
Here are the pics I have from today. It is getting there.

It's not going to last. Temps are going to be to warm next week. Not to mention the wind that's coming.

As of 0600 1/2/2015 Ririe is partially frozen. Open water in spots and all open south by highline wires. Cold spell should continue to build ice. Look forward to walking on water at Ririe.

With the 20 plus mph winds it will take care of the ice plus temps in the mid 30's will finish what is left.

Warm temps and 20mph gusts today. I have a feeling ririe is hosed.

Wind is blowin more like 40+ up there right now. I think I'll drive up and take a look, I'm not that far away.
