Well I checked the other pond on the way to Mantua this morning and found 4" of ice so I decided to stay and avoid the crowd. I wasn't alone by any means but it wasn't too bad. Anyway the trout were hungry I ended up with 16 in 3.5 hours. Had one big boy teach me not to try forcing fish to do what they don't want to. Snapped my line with my favorite jig. Things slowed down after that. Anyway it was fun but seemed colder than Mantua on the 12 below morning. Later J

Now that looks cold. Nice to see you got out and had some action. Nice sized fish there.

Had to sort through a lot of small ones, but I think I had 6 better than 12.5 up to almost 14". But some are fatter fish. Thanks J

When you mention other northern pond is this hyrum your talking about? If you don't want to mention it not a problem. I've never fished it and have always wanted to.

Jeff let me know when you go again..maybe I can meet you out there. We should get Mike and Yote to join us too.

How big do you think that 'big boy' was before you lost him?

Planter Trout don't usually excite me much, but the potential for a lunker is always intriguing. Smile

Nice! Cool setup!!

Don't know why that reply didn't go to you. Must have been tired when I tried to send it. Thanks again. J

Yes it was Hyrum, sorry didn't mean to be coy, just a lot of locals don't like me letting secrets out. But word will be out after the weekend. I really like Hyrum for trout because you can go just about anywhere on the pond and catch some. Makes it a good spot to take beginners and more experienced anglers can have some fun on browns or bass and perch. Ice depth is sort of consistent except for the inlet area. Anyway good luck. J

Derek, I like that plan. Let's hope the ice holds and maybe next weekend would work. Guess I better go to work this week before they get too used to me not being there.

Don't have a good idea how big that fish was but it didn't budge a bit it felt bigger than the cats I play with but it broke off so fast I didn't even start to turn it. Good fish. The warden told me about a 25" brown caught by the ramp that day and said someone got a 28" bow but these were stories from a second party so I can't vouch for them. The bow was supposedly over 9lbs. Sounded good to me. I think I only know how to catch planters so I doubt I'll catch a toad but fun to dream. Later J

Hey thanks for the compliment I should have set it up so it didn't look so messy. I just liked the look of an ice pond without a million other tents on it. Guess the Mantua gathering is a little crowded for this small town boy. Don't like to feel like I'm in Walmart when im fishing. Anyway it was nice to only have 40 or so other crazy people out and they all wanted to go up to the inlet so that was fine with me. Made it a lot less crowded where I was. Thanks again. J

You don't want me along, hehe! My bad ice fishing mojo cursed mantua today from what I could tell. Who knows, maybe that's what I get for skipping church and going fishing. [Smile]
I was at mantua from 9:30-3:30 today and only got 1 Perch, 1 bass, and 1 10 1/2" bluegill. The jumbo gill was a thrill though!
I must not have the touch, must have used up my finesse skills during the whitefish run here at bear lake.
Good idea though and I'm game!

Looks like an awesome day Jeff! I was debating between mantua and hyrum today, but the hype about mantua got the better of me. Shoulda got my weekly religion instead I guess because it was dismally slow for me.
I was going to hit mantua on New Years day, but I got a call about a cougar under a cabin that morning and the DWR and my son and myself spent until 3:00 catching it and getting it on its way to its new home! That was worth skipping fishing for![cool]

Careful Mike, with a bluegill claim that big, Yote will acuse you of catching the state record lol

He must not realize I've caught quite a few gills in the 10" range. They used to be fairly common in that pond before the masses found out about it.

I don't know what it is about Mantua but it sure drops off fast. That's why I hit Hyrum yesterday. Either that or the skipping church thing. Anyway chasing Cougars sounds fun, not easy to pull one out of a crawl space I recon. Well keep the fridge door open so the ice holds a while and we'll circle the wagons one day soon. Later J

Hehehe...I know that it was a big bluegill, but I've caught them that big before, they are just not THAT common.
like you said, I too have caught them 10 and over during the spawn, but these are bluegills........fried fish and fish tacos(if you get my drift)!
I did measure it, but I was feeling quite humiliated by only catching one fish that whole time (my daughter caught the other two) so I didn't really feel the need to preserve my failure with pictures.[laugh] It was a beast though for a bluegill.
come to think of it, I don't even know what the record bluegill is, maybe I've nudged it a few times and not known it.

Eh, it was probably only 10 inches, you know how that goes...

I'd probably hit Mantua a bit more if I keep finding those chunky perch! They excite me more than planter bows. BUT a Tiger Trout or a Big Brown are on my bucket wish-list, and that'll be Hyrum to make that happen. 9lbs, woof. I can believe it.

The Mantua crowds didn't bother me, but that's cuz I stayed away from the "usual" spots for a change. Panned out (get it?)

Looks like some fun Jeff, you're selection paid off for ya. Wish they didn't charge during winter, or at least offered a reduced rate... maybe I'll just HAVE to break down and get a parks pass. Might be the impetus to take advantage of spring-time at Willard!
Sounds good Jeff.
While I'm thinking about it, You and any other BFTers over there should come out to the Cisco Disco and Monster Plunge on January 24th. There are prizes for the biggest cisco, a chili cookoff and tasting and the fun of watching a bunch of insane people jumping into freezing water. Anybody can enter the big cisco contest and chili cook off and the prizes from sportsmans warehouse are pretty substantial..

It's not the size that matters...........[laugh]

If you're going to fish Willard the park pass pays for itself quick. I didn't fish Hyrum much at all this summer with all my catfishing but my pass still paid for itself already and it's good till May. So I think it's worth it. Especially this time of year when I don't have to wrestle my sled up and down the hill. Oh and I did catch a trophy tiger (9") there. Anyway if Ya don't want to pay you can go in the west or east ends. But just take a bucket for gear. Hope to see ya on the pond soon. J

Hey Mike I got the disco on the calendar and plan to be there. Still have a few Cisco I need to get used before the season. Let's see we can have a second limit in the freezer this year though so I may not have to get them used before it starts. Didn't make as many trips to BL as I wanted to but it was a good year anyway. If I don't see ya before we'll see ya on the 24th. By the way is the chilli cook off at Cisco or the marina? How much are they charging to partake? I imagine you got signed up as one of the judges.

Oh btw did you get the call to rescue my nephew in the sink hole on New Years day? If so we sure appreciate your help. Poor kid is dang lucky to be alive after a 60' drop into that Rocky abyss. He definitely had someone protecting him. Later and thanks. J
