I got tired of my rods getting beat up as they traveled along in my sled. I used a rod case for awhile and that took up to much room.
yesterday I thought, why wouldn't the rod holders that we use in boats not work. So I made a set in the garage..see what ya think.

Those will work great. One suggestion. Take a rasp (I have one that has a bit on it to fit in my drill) and cut down the top edge a little ways, on the rear of each tube. The handles on your rod will fit in the groove and this will prevent your rods from turning as much while the sled is being pulled.

I did something similar to my Jetsleds but instead of maple ( I can tell from the burn marks), I used aluminum flat stock to make it more weatherproof. I didn't use wood for fear of getting it wet if it ever snows when I'm out on the lake. I also used rivets to attach my holders to the aluminum stock and regular bolts/wing nuts for attachment to the sled. One thing that I would be careful about having the rods in the holder is to make sure that your sled doesn't tip over if you are pulling it on uneven terrain and have the weight of the sled be on your rods. From the looks of your sled, it looks wide enough that you may not have to worry about that. I would also do what Kent suggested about notching it and keep the rods from turning and getting tangled.

P.S. I would keep the rod case and use it during transport in your vehicle.

I used oak. Burns are due to a really dull blade.

Looks great. I did something similar with a 5 gallon bucket and pvc pipe. I just attached the pvc pieces to the exterior of the bucket using a roll of flat steel tape that they use in home construction to anchor pipes to the frame of a home. A few bolts, nuts and washers and a dab of locktite and it works great. I did as someone else suggested and cut a notch in the top to hold the reel in place when transporting. I use the bucket to take the fish home in, and the entire thing is completely weatherproof and easy to hose out.

I use my sled to pull behind my snowmobiles and did not want to have to remove anything before pulling the kiddos around. Although if it were attached using cotter pins.... well, that is a project for another day.

My bad on the wood ID. I've done some projects in maple and it burned so easily, even with a sharp blade. Post pictures of the rod holders with the notches.

That is a nice set up. I made something similar but didn't put the holders on the inside. I know when I start pulling my sled over long distances my reels come loose off the poles because of the way they mount so I had to tape them a little. Don't know if any of your poles are like that but it's a thought so you don't drive home and realize you lost a reel on the ice!

I also did the same thing only I mounted the tubes on the side of my sleigh so I have the length of the sleigh to hang the auger bit over the end. the slots also prevent the reels from coming loose and turning

the only thing I don't like about standing rods up in the sled is when the
sled tips over, most of the time it breaks the rods. I used pvc piping and built a top
on my sled and lay my rods down and they are protected if it tips over. I've seen and
had my sled tip over plenty of times in the deep tracks.

Man, I didn't even think about the reels coming loose.
I'll be on Panguitch tomorrow afternoon to test everything out. I'll keep and eye on the reels.

This is what I came up with. I used thin wall PVC and stainless fasteners. I cut a groove as well for the reels to sit in.

Looks good. I wouldn't put my rods vertical though. Because I often have seen my sled tip over. But if you only use boat ramp entry's you'll be fine. I always use bungy cords to hold all the heavy stuff down and put the rods on top horizontal in a large PVC tube. Only the reel and handle exposed.

Thats a great idea and alot less work.

I attached a picture with the notches cut in.. I used a Dremell with a cutting blade.

This setup has worked great so far. It makes switching out rods quick and easy..
