I'm wanting to take my 5 year old son out ice fishing on Saturday and I'm thinking of making the trek from Pocatello to Mackay to get into some kokanee. Has anyone been out there recently?

Well - I ran out to Mackay this evening, didn't arrive until about 5:00 pm just as everyone else was pulling out. A nice gentleman parked beside us gave me his leftover mealworms, for which I was grateful. My two kids (ages 5 & 4) tend to be rough on those babies when baiting their hooks.
The ice by the dam is about 12" thick, and about 7" most everywhere else north of there. We set up the shelter as the sun was going down, lit up our lights and settled in for a nice evening just as it got dark. Never got any trout, but the kokanee are in essentially unlimited supply - at least they were for us. Typical Mackay size though.
If anyone is headed out that way PM me for details if interested.
Now - on to the fish fry!

Thanks for posting your report, always good to get the kids out fishing. I've never fished Mackay, what is the average size of the kokes there? I've never tried ice fishing after dark for them, actually I'm surprised you can even catch them after dark. Do you think the light in your tent helps draw them in?

Just got back from fishing Mackay all day. Caught a limit of koks but they were all very small, eight to nine inches. Unless your kids have reflexes like Bruce Lee they are the lightest biting fish I have ever tried to hook....Won't be going back there for a while I think.
