Did a drive by at east canyon yesterday and its almost ice free to launch a boat. Give it a couple of days and it should be good. There is a huge open water spot in the middle that goes from bank to bank. I am taking my boy scouts fishing for trout this weekend and cant decide to go bank fish from east canyon or to go fish Jordanelle from a boat. I usually prefer trolling but cant decide which will give the boys better odds at landing fish for their fishing merit badge. Any help in this decision would be helpful. I have attached some photos of east canyon.
East canyon for sure with a boat would be your best bet. Your not gonna catch monsters but the quantity of fish should make it a fun filled day. Pop gear with a wedding ring with a piece of worm, I personally use downriggers down 18-24 ft with a dodger and a squid, or type of wedding ring, move around until you find the fish.

try fishing the on the surface with the pop gear after ice off. just get it out far enough to stay under. Gulp corn on a WR works too and stays on the hook better.

Hard to tell from your pics but if you can find a spot where there is some open water but the ice is close enough to cast on to fishing can be hot. I have done well in the past by casting my power bait rig on to the ice and pulling it off slowly letting it fall right below the edge. last time I did this I used a 2 1/2' leader. Chartreuse has done me well in the past with Salmon peach and orange also working well at times. If I were closer that's where I would be tomorrow.
Hope this helps.

Thanks for the report! I think I'm taking the wife up there tomorrow for Valentine's day... I have never been so it will be a fun new experience!
