I may be completely in the wrong place for this post. (One of many reasons for this request). I am hoping that some of you might be able to give me a 1 or 2 sentence tip on how to use and follow some of the posts that are going on more efficiently. I just came across this site about a month ago and created an account. I have logged on every day and tried to share what little knowledge I have while learning from all of you. I hope to prove myself enough as a genuine contributor that I might even get called up to the big leagues one day (that’s not my priority however).

Here are my frustrations I am hoping to figure out:

When I log on I am always wading through old posts and replies to get to the newest gems. I feel like Bill Murray in Ground Hog Day.

What is “Sticky”? What is a “thread”?

I joined the Catfish Contest and want to follow that regularly as well as post the picture of the future winning fish and I am not sure where I should put it. (I guess I left myself wide open here… I meant “post it”). I see post all over the place but it does not feel organized to me. Please don’t think I bitching about BFT and how it is set up I am just hoping you can point me in the right direction.

BFT can be confusing to a new member until you have been around for a while and got the feel for how it is laid out. Here is a link to Contest board where you can post your fish pics for the catfish contest: http://www.bigfishtackle.com/cgi-bin/gfo...?forum=100
Also, if you have any question I or any of the moderators on any of our boards will be glad to answer any question you have, just send up a PM or Private Message. A sticky post is something we want members to see so we Stick them at the top of the page so members will have easy access to them to find if they have a question. A thread is a group of post that when added together form a thread. Members add to threads every day so what you think are old post are just what current topic is for any given day. We are between seasons right now, so there is more discussions about topics of interest but as the temp warm and members are able to get out more, you will see more fishing reports and less discussions. Again send me or one of the other mods a PM if you have more question we are here to help, and welcome to BFT.

Howdy, Stickleback.

I'm assuming you're on a pc or a desktop device, yes?

When you first log in, try to ignore all the flashy ads and focus on the middle section. This is where all the posts will be highlighted and you'll just need to click them.

The "Sticky" posts are ones that the moderators and admins of this site feel are important and should stay posted at the top (like a sticky note).

New posts will always be just under the "Sticky" posts. A "thread" is basically just a topic and its subsequent responses; a string of messages relative to the same original post.

To post a photo, you'll click "reply" or "New Thread" and fill in what you want to say in the message box. Below that box is an icon to choose your image/file. Click that and navigate your pc to find the image you'd like to attach, then click that.

Now you'll also want to click "upload image" to the right of the choose image/file box.

There's also an option to post the image inline (meaning you won't have to click a link - it will appear with the text), but I can't help you there. I've never had it work, though I've been posting on forums for years.[crazy]

After all that, click submit and hope it works

It might take a week or so before I could do it, but I would be happy to stop by your house and show you how to use BFT. If interested, just click on my name and send me a Personal Message (PM).

Stick-- Hey, I went thru the same tech frustration when I joined BFT a few years ago. Best solution I found was to call a kid or a gkid and tell what you want to do. Any kid you see walking around with a tablet, ipod, or phone in their hand will do. I use the same gkid I call when the microwave needs to be re-set after a power outage. Pay attention to what/how they fly and eventually you will become at least tech savvy enough to maneuver around in the BFT world.

Welcome to BFT and especially to the Cat Contest.

You are all great thanks for all the suggestions. I will work on these and ask my kids for help. I hope to get a new Apple desk top next week ( as step from the 2e I am using now).[Wink] My kids have also instructed me that I will trade my "dumb phone" in for the smart one. Can you do that with kids too?

Just 2 more question for now? What is the "report post" button and the little orange icon that has the letters in it?

I don't see the orange icon anymore maybe it not important.

Thank you again for all your tips! And for the person that called me "Stick" I like your short version. My kids always follow it with "in the mud".

The report post button is there to help us the mods out. If a post is breaking the rules or has a problem you hit the report post and we are notified about it.
