First off, let me just say how much I love living right next to SH! Such an amazing fishery!
Went out with the wife and 2 year old on Saturday to SH, air temps around 75 when we arrived at 11am. Water temps were hovering around 57-58...nice! You could definitely tell that they had dumped a lot of water in the lake...it was actually murky (which is crazy for
SH that normaly has gin-clear water), and the water levels were up a good 8 ft from two weeks ago. All great news! We needed the water!
Headed out to try and find some pre-spawn stagers in 20ft of water. With the murkier water conditions, I started throwing a craw-colored crank that dove 20ft and just crawled it along the bottom...caught two fish doing this, but it definitely wasn't what they were after that day. So...I switched to a 3/8 oz jig in pumpkin with a craw trailer. Picked up a couple more out in 20ft of water, when it dawned on me...have they moved up already? I brought the boat in towards the bank and first cast...BAM! Second cast...BAM! (you get the trend here). It was fish on for the next two hours! Not just bucks, but nice females were found just off the shoreline. My 2 year old girl had a blast trying to reel those suckers in! So fun...
The wife wanted a fish fry that night, so I turned my attention toward finding crappie...and boy did I! Big crappies...17-18". Kept only 5 and let the rest go back and do their thing. Needless to say, dinner was delish! [sly]
It's a great time to get down to SH!
