Hit Willard bay this morning for the first time this year. I fished it several times last spring and did OK on Crappie and a few smaller Wipers. A big Wiper in my fly rod was a goal this year. I launched my pontoon at the south marina. As I was getting set up a boat was launching next to me. He noticed my BFT sticker in my window and untruduced himself. It was Wiperhunter. Its always cool to meet a fellow BFTer.

I trolled out and worked up towards the Hog farm. I was using a white/ grey clouser minnow on a intermediate line. I had a good hit and something on for a few seconds and then lost it. Not sure what it was. A couple minutes later I had another hit and the fish decided to head to the other side of the lake. I was headed into my backing but got him stopped and turned around. A nice 18 wiper! I caught a couple more the same size as well as two smaller 10 inchers. What a fun fish on a fly rod. I'm definitely going to do more of this.

Very nice!!
I would love to do that on my kick boat. That would be a blast to catch on a fly rod. Walleyes would be fun too. Never caught a walleye in Utah. That's my goal
Thanks for the good pics.

Before you go you better check and make sure the warranty on the four weight is good.[Wink]

I agree about the 4wt being light, I caught them on my 8wt which I was thankful for having. Good luck!

It was nice to meet you out there Mark, glad to see you found some willing fish. How deep of water did you catch those fish in, if you don't mind me asking? Thanks for posting your report and pics, I bet Fishgiver read your post with interest[Wink].

Wiperhunter I was getting them in about 5-8 feet of water.

I agree about being undergunned with a 4 weight. I used a 6 weight and just barley felt like I was in control. I have been looking for an excuse to pick up a 8 weight fly rod. I think I have found it.

I would have to run it down like a tuna. Haha. Most likely wont do it and wasnt too serious about it but im pretty sure it can be done.

That's what I am talking about! Very nice!!

So were you casting/stripping or just trolling the clouser?

I did a fair amount of trolling playing with different speeds with my trolling motor but everything I caught was when I was trolling slow then stripping in with medium fast strips.

Hmm thanks, similar to how I was fishing for pike with my fly rod.

Thanks for the info. I'm going to try to get up there saturday or Sunday morning. Haven't used my 8 weight since I was in the Puget Sound chasing Coho's off the beaches.
