Was out to the island, make note of the reef that runs towards Spanish Fork Canyon, be sure to steer clear, it runs out about 300 yrds, seen 3 boats find it today, took video of the state parks dredging the reef, hope it turned out ok, water temp 53 deg, walleye havent started to roll yet, seen some cats caught on the north side, only heard of a few eyes being caught by the orchards. I cant fish there, I dont play well with crouds. .

Thanks for the update.

that reef comes off the south east corner and runs south east. I've known a few people that have run into it and hurt their boat pretty bad.

Gotta love it when it is the state parks guy that gets stuck.[bobhappy]
Great video thanks for sharing it.

Yep, that reef runs out there a long ways. I found it twice in my earlier days of boating. Thankfully, just a couple minor dings to the prop.

There is one trench across it know, with I would have thought to mark it with my GPS, I couldn't believe those motors still run after he got out, let alone the props where OK

That video was painful to watch. I've "autographed" a few rocks in that area in my early day but I stay clear of it now. I fish the Bird a lot but I always drop the electric and sneak in carefully. Live and learn.
Tip of the hat to you guys that were willing to help.

He was checking our boat tags and motored over that way, I yelled at him, he kept going, he could of backed out when the boat hit, but he gunned it up on it and kept going.

Bird Island is like a square with long projections that run off each corner. the South East reef is the longest at over a 1/4 mile in length. the North west is the shortest at about 20 yds. South west is about 50 yds and the north east is about 100. One of the deepest spots on the lake is a depression that is about 30 ft across and about 16 ft deep off the north west corner, north of the reef.
It is not fun to hit one of those reefs, but it is sure fun to fish em !!!! All that rock out there is volcanic by the way !!
[#0000FF]Here is a Google Earth historical pic of what Bird Island looked like at the end of our last big drought in 2004.
Funny how much it looks like a humming BIRD.

I was hiking the "Y" on Saturday and look out over the lake and saw the island. Just to confirm, is that Bird Island I saw, just poking out? It is usually buried in the water during high water seasons, right? I've always wanted to fish it but the word is to only go if you're familiar with the area, so I've avoided it. Now I see why.

Yep, and birds all over it right now, per the moniker. You gotta come up on it slow.

Thanks for the video - proof if you don't own the boat and hit the reef you will just keep throwing the throttle at the problem until you get free - where as some boat owners would have gotten in the water and pushed it off the reef to minimize any damage to the motors or boat. Musta missed the "Just Gun it Boat Training Class. [:/]
Thank YOU Tax Player for paying for those dinged up props!

That's years of boating enforcement and knowledge supported by you tax dollars.

If I couldn't push it off with my 12' boat hook, I would certainly have jumped in and pushed my boat around until I freed it up. But then like you say, it's not his boat.
Is the best approach directly from the west, heading at the island going directly east? And going slowly with the electric motor pulled up pretty shallow, I presume?

is Bird Island an old Volcaneo waiting
