So, looks like they are planning to raise the dike at Willard! I figured it would be a year or two down the road, but this article says they could start in 2-3 months! Now, hopefully we can get the water in the next few years to fill it!

I just read that article also. Excellent news! Now let's hope for some wet winters and agreements from all who own the water rights.

They awarded the bid last week so I'd assume work would start pretty soon.

U don't really think even if we have the water they will put a Xtra two feet in the do ya. That money could be way better spent on marinas with a decent dredging just another waste of federal dollars.

Can Anyone answer the question who is Paying For It ?

Weber Basin Water.

Raising the dikes is one thing but have they considered what they'll need to do at the swim beaches and camping areas if the filled level is several feet higher?

I didn't see the article, so perhaps that was covered.

The completion of Willard Bay was 51 years ago. My two cents is that they’re not really gaining any more water than they original had. They’re just trying to recover what they’ve lost. In that time frame I would have to assume the bottom of Willard has come up at least two feet due to silt in. Much more economical to raise the dike than dredge the entire bay.

Population continues to grow while the snow pack and annual rain fall remains the same. It’s just simple math, we need more water.

Weber Basin Conservancy Water District owns and operates Willard Bay.
However we the tax payers will be helping fund the project.

Weber Basin will be paying a portion of the cost with revenue received from water users. The rest will come from Federal grants.

As far as using the money to improve recreational programs, we have to remember that Willard Bay was built for water storage.
Recreational use is a secondary interest here.

The State, in cooperation with Weber Basin , develops the recreation opportunities there.
In other words, it is a privilege and not a right for us to access Willard Bay.
We are very fortunate that the State had a good working partnership with Weber Basin.
Without it, there would be no recreation use at Willard Bay.

Camping and beach areas should have little to no affect. The only area that will see a major overhaul will be the N. marina.

For some reason I am Skeptical about 10 million private dollars being spent to raise the water level in a man made impoundment that has not seen water at the top for many, many years. Federal money must be involved in the dike raising project itself or in the securing of water to fill such a project.
Private water districts have notoriously used any source of federal funding to enrich the few that are provided benefit.

Lets remember that without federal money there would be no Willard Bay.
Without Federal money there would be no raising the dike. These projects that directly benefit only a few are funded by Taxpayers and the side benefit are rightfully extended to the public.

Gee mister wipe my mac I didn't say dredge the whole bay, raising the dice two feet they are not going to put a additional two feet above full pool.just my nickels worth. ADD TWO MORE FT OF WATER THE NORTH CAMP GROUND IS GONE. O get some more dough and build a new die around it too.

If memory serves me right I believe they raised the dike back in the late 80's or early 90's. I worked at Thiokol then and can remember seeing the big equipment on the dike as I traveled too work and back. .

The work back in the early 90's was to restore the dam crest back to the original design elevation. With the embankment being constructed on lake bottom sediment, some areas of the dam have settled as much as 17 feet since the initial construction (50 & 60's).

They have already said that they would built the dike up around the camp ground, if needed as part of raising the dike two feet, it will all be included with the same funds.
They have marked the North marina off all ready with blue and yellow flags and it barely make the two extra foot limit. It will be interesting to see what happens if we ever get enough water for the level to go up that high.

I sure hope to see it full one day! But you have to imagine it's probably decades away... Willard is only 1/3 full as it is and there are a lot of really low reservoirs upstream (Echo,East Canyon, Jordanelle).
I heard talk of pulling water from Bear River, anyone have any info on this possibility?

What ever it was for I know the dike was raised above the height it was when I first got stationed here in March of 1976 and started catching my 1st walleye there. In those days you could drive around the dike in a two wheel drive and fish pretty much anywhere with out many fisherman even during the walleye spawn, the only place that would draw a crowd was the snag fest at the inlet until they finally closed it to fishing.
