I have only been a member of this site for a little while and in the posts I see people mentioning "lurkers" a lot...what are lurkers?

Ha! I thought I saw the word "lunkers", not "lurkers" ...we all know what a lunker is right? lol
Yeah, they call "lurkers" and "trollers" people who get on BFT to see other peoples reports but refuse to share their fishing info with anyone else by posting themselves...

Hey,
Im a pretty big lunker myself. Not because Im selfish but because of this dang job that is all consuming to the point of stupid. I am a member just a quiet one. That's about to change though, retiring April 30, Just bought a small boat so all that will change when I can actually fish again. Heck I may post 'dang it I sank my boat first time out '
( newbie) boat owner.

Here's the lurker problem..If your a nice guy and go on the internet and tell everyone how great your fishing was at XYZ. The next time you show up to those spots anyone who has internet access is going to be there..Perfect example is Willard right now..Strawberry was the same way for the ice fishing crowd.
I personally will post reports for specific lakes or spots that everyone knows about anyway. The good spots and reports I keep to myself and close friends. If I posted what I'm catching and were right now. I would have every person from Nevada to Comifornia invading my fishing spots.. Right now we have areas completely to ourselves without pressure and it makes for a more enjoyable experience.
I had to learn the hard way and put a lot of miles on my truck searching and exploring to find those great spots.
Hunters do the same thing about where they hunt every year..

look at how many views your post got. Now imagine if this was a real report and half those people decided to go where you reported on. Now imagine the other half telling all their friends about the report they just read. just like lemmings, everyone follows. Now imagine being the a person who actually provides good reports and then goes back to the same spot and have bunch people tell you the exact thing your reported says and try to pass it off as if it was their own information. Or go to the local tackle shop and the people working there repeat your report word for word to every person that comes in to get a sale. I love to help out but the crowds and trash that follow are not what i want.

Couldn't have said it better.
With the age of the internet, comes the age of the masses. Some fisheries are big enough and plentiful enough that mentioning the location is just fine (although there are still implications); but most areas simply cannot handle all of the pressure and still be expected to be a 'good' fishery.
Let's face it, there's not enough good fishing areas for all of the licenses being promoted and sold in this day and age.

For those members that do have access at this point on the premium reports board, post there. That is why it was made.

When I first started fishing, I used to use BFT to find good spots to fish. I would look for reports on hot spots and good fishing. After a while I noticed that there aren't many reports on spots other than the big fisheries for reasons that were mentioned in other posts. There isn't much about sweet spots or honey holes. That is not what it is about. I am not on BFT regularly. But when I am on, I will usually post o comment or two here and there. Now I look on BFT for fishing techniques and tricks of the trade. BFT is a treasure trove of information from amazing anglers with years of experience and know how. I did not start fishing until I was in my early to mid 30's. I had no idea what I was doing. Thanks to many good people on BFT, I learned some great information that has helped me to enjoy the sport and have some rewarding relaxing hours fishing. One member in particular even took me out with him to learn to ice fish. I cannot say thanks enough to those who share their knowledge. The archives are amazing too and have answers to about every question ever asked about fishing of every kind. I hope you enjoy BFT and get some valuable information that can help you improve as an angler and enjoy this great pass time even more.

Yes. It's very interesting. I also think that the DNR is to blame tho. They have that "Hotspot" map. And whenever that is updated you will see many people lining the shores .. that's good to know about the premium board. I need to post some more reports and get there so I can share a little more info comfortably. Because it's tough when you wanna help out fellow anglers. And not cause over fishing and depletion

90% of the time the DNR report is at least 2 weeks old,and they dont have all the info anyway,I dont even look at their report anymore.Like right now they say there are still large slabs of ice on parts of the berry.

People who want to find a quick post to tell them where to go don't respect the info or the place that they go to. I guess if you like to collect recyclables telling everyone your favorite spots is a valid strategy because you'll have plenty of beer cans and powerbait jars to take in when you show up the next time.

Also, the board at Sportsmans is just copied off the DNR's reports so dont rely on that to be too up to date either!

Yeah I agree. Personally I don't ever go off of that. But I have noticed that when they post somewhere as "hot" that it's packed

I absolutely appreciate the reports and techniques posted on this board, and hope someone has benefited from my posts as well. It seems like in Utah, there are plenty of fish to go around if you have the slightest idea what you are doing.
Additionally, I move a lot, and tend to look at local fishing boards as a jumping-off point for learning how to fish an area, rather than a "how-to" guide. While reports and techniques can help shrink the learning curve, they doesn't automatically translate to more fish. There is no substitute for paying your dues on the water to figure out what works and when.
