Sure it was shad? I was out there on Tuesday and noticed the carp were starting to spawn along the shore in the shallows and splash around in little groups.
Looks like a nice dinner ya got there!

I believe cat-tech! We went out in the canoe recently for crappies and found wipers "boil" within a bunch of shad! Little birds were all around too! pretty darn cool to watch

That was quite the rude thing to say to him! Why don't you get out there and experience it for yourself instead of trying to start a fight (unless this is a joke between you and him).
Irks me though that people get jumped on here for reporting something good.
I have personally seen 12-14" shad this time of year in the past swarming the shoreline, once right off the mouth of the marina. And yes, they were definitely shad, not carp...I definitely can tell the difference.
Lighten up dude, it's just fishing!
P.S. Thanks for the heads up cat-tech, great pics also, I really enjoyed them.

Actually Littlebuck, he is likely right. I'm not sure how much you have been out on Willard this year but everything is about a month ahead of schedule and I have seen shad spawning at the end of May in a lot of years, so it is about a month early for them to spawn. IMO, because the shad numbers are down this year, there is a good chance we will see wipers boiling this spring, especially if the water level at Willard drops lower than last year. From the stomach contents of a lot of wipers caught this year, very few have shad in them but instead they have crawfish in them. I have seen very few schools of shad this year and if you were wondering why the wipers started biting early this year, the likely cause is because the wipers were running out of food early. After the wipers go through their false spawn and before the baby shad get big enough to eat is when we just might see some wiper boils this year. That could happen right now and continue for a month or two. If there is enough water to launch a boat in two months, it might turn out to be a very good year for those of us that like to chase wiper boils but I guess we will have to wait and see what happens. It has been a strange year at Willard, so who knows what will happen for sure.[crazy]

You may very well have seen Wipers, what I've been seeing lately is small packs of Crappie busting the surface. Like they are either feeding on something or startled by the presence of a boat.

It is your call if you post or not but you need to consider that everyone that can't see what you see and has had a different experience, could think different than you, it is not that they are calling you a liar but they just haven't seen the same thing as you, so they question you. Some members are better than others at expressing themselves in a manner that doesn't seem rude but in life we are all different, so please take replies with a gain of salt and try not to be offended by them. I know that is easier said than done at times but in the big scheme of things negative comment are just a part of life and who among us haven't heard them before. About all any of us can do is try to explain what we saw and move on, if there are those that don't believe us, well that is their problem. Over the years I have had many experiences at Willard and other places that people said were impossible but when you are there and experience them, who really cares what others think as long as you know they are true. Many of us that fish Willard a lot, have had days when we have caught 30, 40, up to 60 fish in one day and it is so funny when the doubters will say, it isn't true unless there are pictures. All I can do is laugh, because when you are in the middle of a spree like that and you are catching fish so fast that you barely get your line in the water and you have another one on, who has the time to take pic of every single fish that are exactly like the last. Even if you did, there would be those that would say they are all the same fish. Life is too short to worry about negative comments from others.

Isn't a marine biologist an expert in plant and animal life in saltwater environments? Just curious.

I was just sharing my experience and what I've seen so far. But there have been some very good points brought up and this has turned into a very informative thread for me! Thanks for posting cat-tech, I'm super excited to go chase some boils soon!
and on another note... I can launch in 4 inches of water, so if yall can't get yur boats in when the water drops even more, hit me up!
