Springers out of the Dutch oven? That will be crazy.

Anyone know what the pit tag- to salmon ratio is for the pahsimeroi and sawtooth hatcheries ? Been following along, doesn't seem to be too many of them coming over. Hoping the extension of the river sections is really due to fish numbers and not just a move to make anglers happy etc. don't get me wrong, I'm happy for the river to be open and have a chance to fish for them in different areas... I just hope there's fish to be caught!! Maybe I'm jumping the gun and there's more fish per tag than what I'm thinking.

I was shocked to see them open the Sawtooth fishery based on what they released in 2013, but right now it doesn't look too bad. Decent numbers already with fish still coming over Bonneville.

Let's hope that the Pahsimeroi run hasn't even started.

SF looking decent, but it's got some work to do yet if it is going to be as good as they claimed.

Long story short: it still looks like a money-move to me at this point.

I'm a little worried about the pahsimeroi numbers as well, sure seems like they should be higher, however if I remember right, pahsimeroi has struggled even compared to sawtooth in recent years.

Hoping more fish start showing up for all of the later fisheries. Not sure if you have any insight on this, but what would be the big reasons for the little salmon/Clearwater fisheries big numbers then lowish numbers so far for the upper salmon region? I understand they're totallyldifferent fisheries etc. but it sure seems with a year like this you'd see across the board higher numbers, for example 2010, where upper salmon fishery was great as was little salmon and others.

That's a generally-safe assumption. Out-migrating conditions play one of the largest roles in salmon/steelhead survival, and consequently, adult returns.

Since most releases are done in the same general time-frame (March/April), the different fisheries should experience similar out-migrating conditions. However, there are a couple of additional considerations: how many are released and where.

The further they have to go, the more that can go wrong. Pahsimeroi fish have about 200 miles further to go than Rapid River fish do, and Sawtooth fish have about 300 miles further.

Since SF, Saw, and Pah are all summer runs, they still have plenty of time to do their thing. I know this is arbitrary, but today is the first day they start calling them summer chinook at Bonneville. With the springers coming fairly early this year, I am thinking/hoping we are just experiencing a longer delay than usual between runs.

What really has me worried is the weak jack return this year... :/

That's something my dad and I have been talking about, the addition travel distance from the upper river. It makes sense that that would be the case, an extra 200-300 miles is no small task.

I really hope you are correct on the summer timing! Would be a great deal to have a nice run through there. Love fishing the upper River.

That Jack return has me concerned too. We've had pretty steady years so to see that plummet is definetly not good. if anything, hope it isn't a sign for a downward trend for more than just next year.

Sawtooth hatchery trapped 3 fish yesterday. 1 hatchery, 2 natural. Looks like a few more fish are arriving over bonneville destined for pahsimeroi and sawtooth. Some eager fish that made it all the way to Stanley by June 9!

Total adults over Lower Granite thru 6/10

there was something wrong with the fish food, or the hormones in the fish food that they think were causing so many fish to return prematurely as jacks. From what I had heard they are happy to see the jack levels down.
[signature]
Well that is interesting, I hadn't ever heard that. Hopefully that is somewhat correct, otherwise using jack "predictor" for next year is not looking good.

Hopefully those numbers keep bumping up. From what I've seen over bonneville a few more pahsimeroi to fish have seemed to show up. Still, those numbers are not really great to have so much of the river open.

We fished the North Fork two weeks ago and my buddy landed 3 jacks in a row after fishing all week not landing one. They say they school together. The low number of jacks is concerning. One F&G that we talked to while fishing says it bodes not well for seasons to come. Better enjoy this year!
