Full Version: New Wiper State Record?

My friends dad caught a wiper today that measured 31 inches, he did not have a good scale to measure weight but it weight just over 10 LBs but the current catch and keep record is only 26 7/8" weighing 11 LBS 2 oz.

What happens if you beat the length but not weight?
How does he get officially into the record books?

If he released it, it may beat the C&R record which is measured in inches. I'm not sure what that current record is?

Catch and release is by length only.

Catch and keep is by weight only. "Total length and girth will be used to validate the weight. Total length must be measured to the nearest 1/8 inch."

Thank you for all the good info!

and yes he did keep it, his sons are taking it to the taxidermist for him for fathers day.

selective harvesting is important but if you almost break the state record and have been fishing for 20+ years I cant blame them for keeping it because I would to get it mounted just like a hunter would for a trophy buck.

you can harvest fish just as good if you keep one trophy fish in all the years he has fished.

Hey on wiper there is no need to try and justify keeping it, they don't spawn their own kind so it's not like you're taking away from the spawning pool... Congratulations on a great fish and more so on being great kids and mounting a wonderful memory for him... Way to go... Later J

I caught a 27 1/2 that is in my avatar and it weighed 8 something. I don't know what the record was eating but I think it was contaminated with lead. Smile

Nice fish, she is a hog! Congrats to Dad!

Thanks everyone, I forgot to mention he caught it at Willard, not sure which side but we typically fish on the south end off the dirt road right before the bend. I'm pretty sure that's where he caught it.

Congrad to your friends dad, from the pic it looks like he was on the North dike, near the outlet. To the best of my knowledge there has never been a wiper caught at Willard over 30" so that is a hog, if he had caught it before the false spawn they do every year, it could have easily gone over 12 or 13 lbs. Just so you know, a fish that size would likely not have survived the Summer with the low water conditions we are having. Too bad he did not take it to the DWR to be checked, that is trophy wiper, for Willard anyway. Here is a pic of a 30" wiper that weighed 11 lbs.

They did call DWR and they said he didn't get the state record by ounces

wow that is a hog, about as big as the carp that are in there!!! nice catch

The guide was the one in that pic holding the 30 incher, you can see the one I caught the same day in my Avatar pic, it is 27" and 9 lbs. We had to travel to Nebraska to catch it though.

Hmm, I have a brother in Nebraska. I wonder if he would be up to a visit?[sly]

We were fishing at Swanson Reservoir with live bluegill with this guide:

Thanks!

These are two of my brothers last trips at a place near him. I think I will need to visiting one of these days though.[Wink]
