Saw a pic on Facebook of a recently caught 8 lb brown trout out of sf payette river. I didn't know they were in there.. It seems the same kid caught the 9 lb rainbow winning the Howdy's derby at Cascade Lake also... Those are some impressive catches! Some good luck? Wonder what they use to catch those trophy's on?!

Never heard of a brown trout on the SF of Payette. I hate to call someone a liar, so let's just say that I view the information with skepticism......

Could the FB poster be pulling a fast one?

I didnt think they were in there also.....but i caught what looks to be the same fish on May 1st and it was super healthy and when he caught it last week he said it had 5 hooks broke off in its mouth so it looks like it whooped a few people before it got caught again

If it is in fact legit, I'd bet that fish and game would want to know about it. They manage that as a wild fishery and brown trout in that system wouldn't help their efforts any.

Where on the river did you catch it, if you don't mind my asking?

Right below the dam off the cliff. The kid said a F & G officer helped him net it but he didnt go into any more details except the hooks and i think he throat hooked it so the officer said it would be better off to keep it.

Ive fished that river alot and thats the only brown ive caught so not sure theirs very many in there.....it was definately a surprise to me and i only showed close friends but looks like the cat is out of the bag now and that spot will probably get lit up more than it already does from being posted on the FB page

I guess I don't know what dam you are referring to. The SF of the Payette does not have any dams that I'm aware of. We must be talking about different bodies of water.

below Cascade Dam

Okay. Now that we are on the same page, I can see that is very possible and removes my doubt and skepticism.

Brown trout were released into Cascade reservoir back in the early 80's. It's is surely possible that some escaped through the dam and established a small population below the dam, or could even still be present in the lake. I don't know how long they live, but I doubt any of the original stocking would still be alive. I'm actually glad to hear that there may still be some around. I personally would like to see more Brown's.

BTW, I don't know of anyone else who considers that portion of river to be the SF of the Payette. The SF flows down from Grand Jean through Lowman and Garden Valley and dumps into the Main Payette and Banks.

Ya looking back i completely dismissed the South Fork part but that is actually the North Fork

Here's a picture of the fish and they were talking SF Payette so I don't know if you can identify the water by the pic http://www.bigfishtackle.com/photos/data...ebrown.jpg

Wow. Thanks for the picture. Sure looks like the SF of the Payette. Must be fairly high up too. Who'd a thunk?

IDF&G stocked browns in the Payette system randomly over the years. Nothing specifically on the South Fork, but they have been known to move around a bit...

I'm going to say with 95% certainty that brown trout photo was taken on the North Fork of the Payette between the highway bridge and Cascade dam.

Having taken a closer look at that area since the picture was posted, I'd have to agree. Was most likely just a bit below the dam at Cascade. Nice fish, though. I would complain if it was on the end of my rod. [Wink] Maybe tomorrow. I'll be fishing the lower Henry's fork tomorrow afternoon if all goes well. Hoping to get a nice brown like that.
