Hey all! My brother and I are headed up the the narrows at the berry tomorrow to attempt a shot at the kokanee from shore. I was wondering if anyone has tried fishing them from shore and had any luck. And if so, what strategy should we try? We figure if we can't get into them we can still always go after cutts and bows. Thanks in advance for the help!

It would be hard most kokes are out in the open water
you would need a Jigging Spoons somthinging like this in pink

Maybe during spawn you could catch some red ones near a river inlet from shore.

I wouldn't bother to try from shore at Strawberry right now.

My wife caught one years ago in the early spring at Soldier Creek off the shore using lime twist power bait.

First of all, welcome to the site. To answer your question, I'd say it is possible although pretty tough to pull off. Your best chance would be to fish the Narrows, since kokes are most commonly found in deep water. The only time I have seen someone target kokes from shore and be successful, they were casting from a spot that drops into very deep water just feet from shore. They were casting silver lures as far as they could and letting them sink for 10 seconds before reeling in. Here is the deal though, you have to be lucky enough for the kokes to be swimming by, close to shore, at just the right time, while you are there. I think that using bright colored lures can also be effective but obviously heavier lures you can cast farther. Good luck and please post a report when you get back.

it can happen but it is highly unlikely you would be successful. on the other hand they can be readily caught in the fall on some of the soldier creek ramps. good luck and welcome to the site [laugh]

Although attempted, I have never caught them from shore at strawberry.

I have caught them from shore at Causey on bright squids and silver spinners.... Causey is much smaller and probably your best shot at shore fishing for Kokes around here.

I think your best chance would be to cast something heavy, like a cast master near deep water. Kokanee are an open water fish so your quest may be difficult. This time of year I find them in the 30 to 40 foot range. Good luck.
