I have an 8 year old son that is really getting excited about fishing. He is turning 9 next week and I want to get him his own fishing gear. He has been using my old junky rods and reels and I want to get him something fairly nice that will make casting a little easier for him.

Do you guys have any advice for me? We are mainly fishing for trout with bait and lures.

Thanks everyone

Try a graphite IM-6 or IM-7 medium light spinning rod. Put 8lb test Berkeley trilene on it. Perfect rod. For gear get a tackle bag (cabelas has them on sale right now-rods too) put some size 10 or 12 and size 7 swivels (yes two sizes)- the 7's work well for the fly and bubble, clear bubbles, small spool of 6 or 8lb test line for leader, spoons- red with white stripe, flies, spinners and he will be set to start.
