Hey everyone, I'm planning to be in Dillon MT for The July 4th weekend.
Just curious if anyone knows how the fishing is up near there or any recommended places.
Doesn't matter on the type: fly, spin, bait...just like to fish.
I've been MIA lately. Was in the Bass tourney out at the gorge about 3 weeks ago. It was a nest fest!! Not the best way to compete when bass are protecting there beds and the water was so clear that we were sight fishing, drop shorting. It was fun though.
Past 2 weeks I've been chasing salmon in ID. Felt like I basically toured half he state. Fished in Riggins and South Fork salmon River near cascade.
But man, that state I surely beautiful with plenty of lakes, streams, rivers, and creeks wherever you go.
The Payette River is amazing. McCall was gorgeous. Cascade I'm going to def try during I've season for them perch.
Anyhow, still need to edit the vid from the gopro. Lots of footage to go through and will post it as soon as I have it done.
Well. If anyone can suggest/help regarding Dillon, it would be much appreciated.
You can PM me also.
Thanks - btw, I know Willard, Utah Lake quite well if you want to trade some info. Mainly shore fishing.
From last Tuesday ULCats
1st Smallie from the gorge
Buddy Andy with 1 of his salmon from Riggins
The Beaverhead river is near Dillon Mt and the blacktail deer creek. The Clark Canyon Res is a popular lake in that are and I read a few reports of members fishing there. Sorry, no first hand info Gumbyk but you could contact one of the local tackle shops there, if no BFT member has been there recently.

Sounds like you have been a busy guy. McCall and Cascade are nice areas and the streams around there sure look nice. I've been to both in the last year but haven't fished there.
Nice Smally, how long was it? Looks like Andy had some success at Riggins. My son has been up there twice this Spring with no luck.

Thanks for the info Curt. Yeah I've been doing some research and just was curious if any members here would have any info. But I appreciate your input. I'm trying to get my fishing in before my crazy work schedule kicks in. We have a tv series for ABC about to start so it's going to be pretty hectic.
The bass was about 3.5 lbs. I was a non boater with a total weight of 5 fish to qualify towards the bass master classics. It was my first tourney and was quite fun. We did to qualifiers in 2 days. I'm now on the WY state team with cowboy bass. Didn't officially make it to regionals in lake mead next spring but from what I'm learning more, I'm most likely going 😃.
Been very fortunate to meet people who have given me the opportunity to pursue these fun adventures I've been on lately.
The salmon run was very fun and interesting how to drift fish with no drag! Those fish are quite the fighters. I got one on my 7' bass rod on my 10 cast lol. People were looking at me like what the heck am I doing haha.
I have a lot of footage on my gopro which I still need to edit and will post my adventure when its finish.
If you have never fished for salmon during the run in ID. You should do it. Hooking up isn't the issue. Landing them is the hard part. Barbless hooks, lots of snags, and it is combat synchronized fishing. But it was quite the experience and good times.
Will let you know how MT turns out.
Thank again Curt!

Dillon Montana rings a bell! I grew up fishing with my cousins on the Beaverhead and Bighole rivers. I spent many summers there. There is some good fishing on those rivers and you can catch some nice browns. We use to use spinners such as gold jakes or gold cyclones. Any gold spoon. Floating a grasshopper also worked really well. Flyfishing either river would also be a lot of fun but i would check with a local shop to see what they are hitting. RL Winston fly rods are made in Twin Bridges, not too far from Dillon. Its a neat place to visit and there is good fishing all around twin especially the Bighole. DO NOT FORGET THE MOSQUITO SPRAY. They will carry you away. Anyway, it is a beautiful place to fish so good luck.

I ice fished Clark, 3 to 4 feet of ice, motor homes, trucks and cars all over the ice.
WARNING: when you cross over out of Idaho into Montana the speed limit drops by 10 or 15 mph, the man is waiting there for you,
He will tell you how much the fine is and you should pay it to him and save yourself some time.
Be careful.

Oh man. You will be in some fly fishing paradise. The Beaverhead, Big Hole, and the Jeff as well as their tributaries. Poindexter Slough and the Ruby river. Several reservoirs, and if you want to travel a bit, the Madison, Gallatin, or even the Mo. For a real treat, Google McCoy's Spring Creek and the Circle 3 Ranch.

It's been quite a few years sinced I fished them but the Ruby river was alwasy good and also the Grasshopper. They are not as big as the other rivers mentioned but both produce some fine fish. The Ruby has some very big Browns and the Grasshopper has large ones too.

Thanks and thank you to all who replied. Unfortunately I have been ill since last Sunday and just barely starting to get back to normal. Doctors orders not to be in the sun and no fishing for a few more days. My neighbors were worried when I was out in the 100 degree + weather in sweats, thermals, wool socks, and a beanie just to keep warm.
It was knarly how cold I was. I was stubborn and didn't go see my doc till Thursday and his diagnosis was heat exhaustion and stress.
It sucks that it had to happen this week, but at least I'll be rested for the next adventure and Dillon will still be there.
But thank you everyone for the advice. Really appreciate it!! 😃👍🏽
