promised a friend I would take him and his two college-bound sons fishing before school starts up again. The Berry hasn't been exciting lately so on Friday we went to my favorite lake, Starvation. A holiday is not a good time to go there, but the bows cooperated anyway and the young men were kept busy.

Got on the water by 7:30 am. Water temp 67 deg and about 10 mph wind. Pink and blue homemade spinners with half a worm trolled at 1.6 and down 26 feet did the trick. Those bows in Starvation are so healthy and hit like a freight train! The boys had a great time learning how to troll and actually catching some nice fish, while Dad took videos. Boated and released 12 or 15 before the rising wind, waves and power squadron convinced us to leave. Left tired, but satisfied that all had a good time on the water while I told fishing stories of the past. Sorry, no pics to share.

PS: Anyone know how Starvation got its name?

According to Wikipedia: “There are various narratives explaining the name "Starvation". One account describes a group of fur trappers stranded in harsh winter conditions who survived by stealing a local Native American cache of food, which resulted in their starvation. Another account tells the opposite story, with the Indians doing the stealing and the trappers starving. A third story involves a local rancher who attempted to graze livestock in the area, and they all starved. The most probable explanation for the name involves settlers in the early 1900s trying to survive along the banks of the Strawberry River, in the area now occupied by the reservoir. These settlers dealt with near-starvation in a hostile environment. Winters in the area are long and cold and their livestock often died. The area's short growing season was hindered by floods, hail, early frost and other problems. These settlers nicknamed the area Starvation”

Imagine that place without man made dams and Starvation comes to mind! I have property out there and it's pretty desolate in the summertime. I love it but its not for everyone. That's my own made up reason [Wink]
I was up there all weekend long and didn't fish. Just played in the water. That is almost a report in itself.
