Caught this sorry lookin' 31 inch bruiser today at Bird Island. Guesstimated at about 12 pounds? Caught several in the mid-20s and one at 28 and another at 27 15/16. Nice day. One other boat at the island. Crew has started football practice so fished alone today but was not lonely... just me and the birds.
Channel is still about 1.5 -2 ft. deep. Launched okay but had a real fight getting my boat out of the water. Trailer tires dropped over the cement and I couldn't get enough depth to center the boat. Spun tires on the truck in the launch slime... 4 wheel drive would have helped. Finally got out but not many launches left for me. Smaller boats probably okay for a few more days.
Water temp was at 68 and the bait of choice was white bass.
The really big ones are yet to come.

Nice cat man,how far is it from the launch to bird island. and is it out of the water?

Bird Island is clearly visible from Lincoln. Probably about a two mile run to the island. Rocky area known for eating props. Use caution going in and you can get within a long cast of the shore.

Woohoo now that's a cat. Definitely toon time down there. Now to find some time to go down. [:/] With school starting soon I am getting distracted. Hopefully next week.[

What did you do...have to beat that beast over the head to get him in the boat? [laugh]
Am planning a trip to UL the weekend of 14th. I don't think I will try to get in down at LB. Do you think the water will be any better up at American Fork? Since I didn't hit it last trip in June, and now with TD great maps I know where and how to get there, wanted to try and finish that little quest. [fishin]

Yep, that one would never do well in a beauty contest. Not much fight in him either... others I caught that day were healthy and good looking. Caught him on a 6 inch wb so he must have been trying to eat well to heal all his love-life wounds. Got 'im back in the water asap so he should make a full recovery.
Not sure about the water depth at AF... others might chime in. Lincoln is a tough launch now. I'd like to get in another week before having to resort to a toon but dunno. I could probably move down the channel with my electric in a foot of water but launching and loading would be really tough. Planning to give it another go tomorrow so will see.
My crew is through with there "conditioning" for football so they want to have another go too. They are more comfortable fishing UL after an altercation with a brown bear last week in Alaska. Ever tried to tell two 14 yr. olds to walk slowly away from a bear at 20 yards? Scared the bejeepers out of me and them.
Big cats will be on the feed soon. If only we had some water.....

[#0000FF]There is a deeper "scour hole" at the bottom of the ramp at AF...but it shallows up in the main harbor and especially at the entrance. But I would guess it would be close to 2' deep with current water levels. TCs small craft could probably launch okay but might have to travel a ways to find deep enough water to attract the fish.
Lincoln Beach has more fishable water these days.

[#0000FF]Whenever I used to come home with a black eye or bloody nose my dad would ask "What did the other guy look like?"
Kinda makes ya wonder how many rounds that busted up kitty had to go...and whether or not he was the winner...and how the other guy(s) look.

Helluva cat, BLK. Nice work. Just curious, what is the biggest cat you've ever caught out of UL?

Glad you and the posse' aren't bear scat these days, makes for an exciting story now you're home safe. I'm hoping to find time to check out the August feed up for the big boys, but not sure when I'll find time. Maybe after my girls go back to school. Later J

FMF-- My best cat was a 33 incher a couple of years ago. Lots of guys have caught way bigger... my turn just has not come up yet. I have heard TD talk about 20 pounders being caught... probably in the mid-30 inch range. I know there is a 30 pounder out there somewhere... one of these days....
I'm done for the year now by boat. Went out today and had a terrible time. Trailer wheels dropped off the cement end and I could not get the trailer out. Got the boat off okay but had to wade out, unhook the trailer, drag the
around to the south, tie a chain on, back the truck around to fetch the trailer out by pulling it out. Then had to call sweet-wife to come down to Lincoln in my 4-wheel drive, hook the trailer on, back into the water and spin and throw mud/slime all over the boat while pulling it up the south bank of the launch channel. Not a good morning.
Toon time for sure.
