Took a quick trip to Minersville today look for some smallmouth...Hadnt fished this lake in a boat in several years and when i did we were in search of trout..

I have to say this place is loaded with trophy trout and we cruised to different spots we could see some nice fish rise...My son kept catching trout on his drop shot rod which kept me entertained throught the day..Weather warmed up and i finally found a few fish early afternoon..

This is my personal best Smallmouth. 4 lbs on the digital scale. We took some quick pictures and got her back in the water.

Disclaimer: no artifical or natural scents where used to catch this fish.

Generally speaking what were you using on the dropshot rigs? I haven't been there in years but if I remember back then I emptied the boat of all of my "bass" stuff since plastics were not allowed to be used/have in possession in the boat. Only flies/hard lures I thought? I pondered trying a fly on a dropshot but never did. If the rules have changed that sure would change my loadout in the boat next time there.

Artifical flys and lures only.
Page 17.
No stipulation on plastics..

Fishing with plastics is ok as long as they are not scented....plastics must be unscented if I remember right.

And unsalted.

Here are the 2015 regulations guys..

Minersville Reservoir, Beaver County
•Limit 1 trout over 22 inches.
•All trout 22 inches or smaller must be
immediately released.
•Artificial flies and lures only.
•Cement outlet channel between the dam
and spillway pond, approximately 55
feet long, is CLOSED.

No stipulations on plastics or scents..

Read on in the "2015 Utah Fishing Guidebook":

"Manufactured, human-made items that may not be digestible -- including items that have been chemically treated with food stuffs, chemical fish attractants or feeding stimulants -- may not be used on waters where bait is prohibited."

Plastics OK, scented anything not OK.

keep reading...there is more in the guidebook that clarifies the rules:
"It is unlawful to:
Use or possess artificial baits that are
commercially imbedded or covered with
fish or fish parts"
and
"Manufactured, human-made items that may not be digestible—including items that have been chemically treated with food stuffs, chemical fish attractants or feeding stimu- lants—may not be used on waters where bait is prohibited."

Just for clarification, from the 2015 Fishing Guidebook, page 11, "Manufactured, human-made items that may not be digestible -- including items that have been chemically treated with food stuffs, chemical fish attractants, or feeding stimulants -- may not be used on waters where bait is prohibited."

And from Page 10, it is unlawful to "Use or possess any bait if you are on waters designated as artificial fly and lure only"

Therefore it is illegal to use scented or salt impregnated baits at Minersville or to have them in your possession while fishing the reservoir. I hope this helps.

From the 2015 guidebook:
Quote:Manufactured, human-made items that may not be digestible—[red]including items that have been chemically treated with food stuffs, chemical fish attractants or feeding stimulants—may not be used on waters where bait is prohibited.[/red]

That includes Minersville.

This is also from the proclamation in the definitions portion.

[#4040ff]Artificial fly [/#4040ff][#4040ff]means a fly made by the method known as fly tying. Artificial fly does not mean a weighted jig, lure, spinner, attractor blade or bait. [/#4040ff]
[#4040ff]Artificial lure [/#4040ff][#4040ff]means a device made of rubber, wood, metal, glass, fiber, feathers, hair or plastic with a hook or hooks attached. Artificial lures (including artificial flies) do not include fish eggs or other chemically treated or processed natural baits or any natural or human-made food, or any lures that have been treated with a natural or artificial fish attractant or feeding stimulant. [/#4040ff]
[#4040ff]Bait [/#4040ff][#4040ff]means a digestible substance, including worms, cheese, salmon eggs, marshmallows or manufactured baits including human-made items that are chemically treated with food stuffs, chemical fish attractants or feeding stimulants.[/#4040ff]

So if anyone wants to use jigs (mentioned to noone in particular here) then try using the marabou jigs. If you don't want wieght then tie up some similar to tying a fly.

Thanks for the clarification.[Smile]

So, so GRAY!...You could call the release agent a scent and/or attractant, for ANY plastics!
[signature]
I bet those rainbows were loving that salt!!!!!
[signature]
Nope. It's a release agent. If it's formulated as an attractant it's an attractant. Manufacturers are very proud of their formulas. If it's designed to attract fish, or stimulate feeding, they'll put it in bold letters on the package.

Just got clarification from DNR on Minersville regulations.

Plastic worms and swimbaits are Legal!.. Fish attracting scents are not.
Just sent the photo to DNR as they enjoy seeing how well the fisheries are doing..

Just to make things really clear for you: plastic worms with any kind of scented attractants are NOT legal at Minersville or any other fishery with artificial only regs.

That specific part of the regulations in Utah are in place specifically because of past problems at Minersville...at one time, fishermen were having a lot of success catching trout on orange ear plugs that had been soaked in fish attractants...it would not have been a big deal, but a lot of fish were being killed because they were being gut hooked and then released. So, as a result of that practice, all scented plastics or baits are not allowed on artificial only waters...
