Hey anyone been out with H&M charters out of San Diego and if so do you remember which boat and Captain? Internet is showing the tuna still running close enough for 3/4 day trips to catch fish. Thanks J

[#000000]I have been out several times on one and a half day trips. Try and get the Top Gun 80. Bob Taft is the captain and I think they might have 3/4 day trips over to Coronado.[/#000000]

You could try posting your question on the Cal board too.

Hey thanks I've been on that boat before they are pretty good. I just heard some guys on BFT saying H&M were really good too. I did hear that the yellowtail are really good for this late in the year so I wondered how long that will last? I've always wanted to try them and I might get a chance to do it if things work out in the future. Thanks J

Hey I've never fished these guys before, how do you do it? And what do I take if I don't have ocean type gear? Is it better to rent gear? Thanks J
[signature]
well the best info I can give you is listen to the deck hand in the morning the only thing is that bite can change any time. it easy rent the gear .

The Ranger 85 is still down there. The Capt and crew are awesome. They will be coming back to Channel Islands soon.

Currently there are all the San Diego and Mexico species farther north in teh Channel Islands. We have been catching Bluefin and Yellowfin Tuna, Dorado and tons of Yellowtail. Striped Marline and Sailfish as catch and release.

You may be better to get a charter out of Channel Islands Sport fishing. The Island Tak and the Seabiscuit are the only 2 boats that can make the trip there. Captain hooks landing has the Speed Twin and Pacific Islander which go out for big game.

Holler back and I can give you rigging and gear information. [cool]

I was on board the Ocean odyssey back in Oct. I would defiantly go again on that boat, great crew and captain. We were on fish all day. I would imagine most of the tuna they are catching now are the smaller ones in the 10lb range. The San diego is an awesome boat as well out of Seaforth.

Thanks for the great advice and offer. I've been hearing about live minnows on a fly rig. I'm pretty sure I don't know what that is. Could you explain it to me. Last time I fished the ocean we used oz sinkers on a big loop, that I forget how to tie, then we fished squid as live bait. So any tips that could help a new to the sea guy out would be very appreciated. I don't have the budget to afford more than the cattle boats and last time they had two guys to help 40 passengers so I figure I better know how to take care of my own rig. Otherwise somebody else will catch my fish. Anyway thank you for the offer. J

Hey thank you for the tip it's much appreciated. Sounds like there are a lot of great options in that area. I'm looking forward to giving it a try. Thanks for the help. J

fly rig for minnows consists of a hook tied to the end of your line, attach minnow to hook and let minnow swim away on its own power. When the minnow gets hit hang on count to three and take reel out of free spool. Some people will use an inline sinker to help get minnow a little deeper. The dropper loop is what I use when fishing for crappie at pineview.

Is it worth a two hook rig in your minnow, head and tail type hook up? How do you use the dropper loop for crappie? Thanks for the details on fly line rig. On a cattle boat how do you keep from getting tangled? Sorry feel like a four year old with all the questions. Later J

No need for 2 hooks use a circle hook thru the nose and let the sardine/anchovy do the rest, the tuna will swallow the bait fish not short strike it. Trying not to get tangled up on the party boats is a daunting task. Try your best to stay in front of your bait, don't find a spot on deck and refuse to move. You have to keep moving on the deck, some people will not, stay away from them. Always keep your line in front of you. When the bite is hot loosen your drag play the fish every one else will be a tangled mess tighten drag bring fish in away from the clusterbleep. Think dropshot for the crappie weight on bottom dropper loops up from that with crappie jigs for vertical jigging.
