I'm looking to cross ice fishing over night for burbot off my bucket list. I'm planning on heading to Flaming Gorge from 12/28-12/30/15. I've read reports about "how" but I'm not very familiar with the area. From what I gather, I would be better off fishing further North into Wyoming. Is this accurate? Maybe even staying in Green River? Or are there decent access points with close hotels on the Utah side (as well as ice by next week.) I don't mind doing some exploring and searching on my own. But I would like a general idea of what I might expect before I make the long drive so I don't waste most of a day just figuring out where to park. Thanks in advance for any good advice!

First I would recommend you get yourself a good map (like one from FISH n MAP CO.) if you don't have one already. It will show you the roads to many access points. Based on recent reports, including the one from Ryno this week, ice extends down lake to near the confluence. So the majority of your options will be north of the confluence. I like fishing up the Blacks Fork arm this time of year. There are several access points, including those from the road to Lost Dog. Google Earth is very helpful in locating potential burbot fishing spots.
As far as where to stay, I have camped on shore and stayed in motels in both Green River and Rock Springs. I prefer staying in Rock Springs because there are more/better motel and eatery options. I get more fishing in when I camp on shore but it is not as cozy and requires a lot more preparation than staying in a motel.

If you have a 4x4 then Lost Dog would be a good place to go. There is a sign on the highway between Green River and Manilla that says lost dog. You take that dirt road for 30 minutes and you end up at Lost Dog.
If you do not have a 4x4 take flaming gorge road before Rock Springs and wait until you hit the sign for Firehole campground. Take that paved road and drive 30 minutes until you reach the marina. It is paved to the marina, but a dirt road further south.
I do like the Burbot fishing better at Firehole, but Lost Dog is a better option for a combo Mac, Bow, and Burb.
You can make it down to Lost Dog without a 4x4, but if it snows at all you will be camping out.
I would suggest camping at Lost Dog or Firehole rather than driving back and forth.

Thanks for the replies. It's definitely helpful. I guess now it'll just take going and getting the first hand idea. I'll post up a report when I'm back!

I'm going to try and get over there this weekend I'm going to try and make it to lost dog. I like to try for more of a variety. Have caught alot of burbs through the ice at lost dog. Never have been to fire hole. Find a rocky area during day stay a lil deeper bout 50 feet of water and once it start getting dark start setting up in 30 to 10 feet. Right on bottom or just off. With glow jigs or spoons tipped with sucker meat. Your more than welcome.to hit me up if you would like I'll help as much as I can.

Thank you much. If I have further questions I'll hit you up. Often, I feel like I don't know what to ask until I've been out there and tried it out. But I have read a lot and watched a lot of videos. I'm excited!
