[cool]Was lazy today & decided to go to Yorba Regional Park which is only 4 miles from my house. Also needed to put my new fishing license to work. $32.80 this year. One of their lakes was stocked with 700 lbs of trout. Not much but better than nothing. Fly fished for a while but nothing doing. Threw out my ultra light gear with power bait. Tried that new mutli glow stuff with the xmas sprinkles ah nothing. Tried some other colors and nothing. Then I remembered when I first starting using Power bait my favorite color for nailing trout was orange nuggets. Guess what within 30 seconds I had a nice little trout. I think that I will bury the other colors.
Question ????? What is your favorite color Power bait and texture??

Every lake, stream, river or other body of water has their particular color that works better. I have used green in some places, white in others, orange at some, bright yellow, blue, chartruese and whatever color that they have available. Different strokes for different strokes.
When I go to the Owens river in the Eastern Sierras, I need to rotate colors about every 20 minutes after I found out what color that they are biting on. That only requires carrying about 20 colors. It seems a little bit much but when you can find out what channel they change themselves to, you can catch & release close to 60 trout in a day. Of course you can keep a couple for the frying pan.

funny you should mention the colors .
i've been fishing my steelhead honey hole for a couple years now . basic orange yellow and reds for my single egg flys .
i made one of my first practice flys in a black and in a brown yarn . i figured i'de give them a try .
rainbows one after the other on the black and redhorse on the browns , who'de a figured the earth tones would get there attention like that ? not me !
a good color seliction is a great back up when the fishing is slow , at least untill you hit the right color .

Hey there Dryrod,
You mean your area's park actually got a plant! You lucky dog? I know I'm hopeless. The park lake closest to me hasn't had a plant in 6 weeks but I'm still willing to try!
I can't help but believe there are always survivors from plants.

Hey JR, don't despair buddy. After the power baits wear off and there are holdovers present, go back to the basics. Floating nightcrawlers. That seems to work at Hansen long after the planters catch on to the powerbait.
[signature]
ARE YOU USING FULL NIGHTCRAWLERS ?
I FIND THAT LEAFWORMS OR REGULAR WORMS GET THE BIGGER FISH , CRAWLERS PRODUCE DURING AND JUST AFTER RAINSTORMS AROUND HERE . THE SMALLER WORMS GIVE US MORE ACTION AND BIGGER FISH DURING REGULAR DAYS .

Hey there Dryrod,
Both Cerritos and El Do are scheduled for planting this week so I guess I'll be takin' off for one or the other here in an hour or so.

The crawlers are too big out here to use whole. I usually have to break them in half.

we get hem big rattle snakes here as well, [sly]
I too break my in half, some times I only take three crawlers out fishing with me, and by the time I use those three up, I have my limit.
the funny thing is I did not pick up my dads and unkels methods of loading a worm. the loop it around and hook it 4-5 times till they get a tail lenth they want.
it has always been known that if you have too much worm hanging off the end of your hook the fish will grab what they can and run off with your bait.

I'm sure that you know that the bluegills are notorious for that. They will pick and pick until they leave you a bare hook sometimes. Other times they will just gulp it down and not know what hit them.

Hey there Dryrod,
I noticed that a lot of the park lake young old-hands use the crappie tube lures rigged Texas style with a 1/32 or 1/16oz leadhead.
My special trick is to fill the tube with powerbait. The lure milks and it is squishy to the feel. Nooooo I didn't bite it myself but.......
That's what I caught my fish on way early this morning.

[cool][#804000]Hey JapanRon,[/#804000]
[#804000]That sounds like a cool idea or squishy. Will have to try it the next time out. [/#804000]
[#804000]Stopped by Sports Chalet today and found that they have a fair variety of rods/reels. Although they don't have the depth of inventory as with Turner's. They have a neat Shimano Curado 100B low profile reel. Didn't realize that one could replace the spool with different weight line when needed. Next I will pop over to Anglers Marine. I hear that they specialize in bass goodies. [/#804000]

Hey Dryrod, Do you have a Sportsmart near you? They have a lot of specials right now for the Bass fisherman. I found out that I get a good discount there as well as Sports Chalet for working with the County Fire Dept.
I just bought a new Penn rod and reel last night. Normally $180. Got 10% off. Yeeee haaaaw.

[cool][#804000]Hi there TubeN2,[/#804000]
[#804000]Yes there is a Sportsmart about 10 miles from me. As I mentioned to JR just discovered that Anglers Marine is only 5 miles from my house. According to their web site they have one of the largest supply of bass tackle going. Since I am in no hurry will check out all of these locations. It is sort of fun to rap with sales people getting their views on different equipment. Doen't take long to discover who should or shouldn't be working behind the counter.[/#804000]

Dryrod, you are right on that one. If at anytime you ask one of those guys a question and they start the answer with " Uh I heard" then you know that they are giving you a line.
I like how one of the local guys at the Turners by my house responds. " Well in this picture I......" and has the proof at hand and not just guessing.

i get the same thing here , i either end up helping out the other coustomers for them in the selection of equipment needed or i am followed around and then greeted at the exit for a brief inspection of my purchases .
i guess a person who is rather particular when he studys and compaires the items he wishes to purchase is suspect . i understand there concern as a pretty large chunk of change can be lost to a less than honest person easily .
now helping out the other coustomers , that's pretty fun , watching the sales cleark standing there in dismay as someone else does his job , well it's priceless . hopefully he retains some of the information and uses the aquired knowledge to better serve future consumers .

Hey TubeN2, thanks for the heads up. I've been meaning to stop by Sportsmart and see what they've got right now. Maybe I can get them $300 sunglasses for their infamous sale price of $70. (They actually only pay about $20 for them... I know cuz I used to work there.)
Was at Wally World yesterday and they've got a lot of stuff in the fishing area on sale as well. They've even got the life jackets hanging already and we've got a couple months before we even get in a boat up here. I guess it's good to have one on underneath your clothes if ice-fishing. Help keep you from going under when that nasty ice cracks and swallows you up. (Grrrr... Lonehunter. [

Got me some 8" Storm Lizards at Gander Mtn a couple days ago. Found them in one of the clearance bins. I love clearance shopping. [

There is nothing like being a good hunter. Bargain hunter that is. I'm the same way. If there is a yellow tag on it then it will most likely end up in my basket.

Tomorrow I head for the Boat Show. Gonna see what kinds of deals they have on their last day. Hehe. Already bought the tickets at $2 off regular admission. I'm almost certain there will be fishing stuff there. But mainly I want to see what kinds of inexpensive boats they have. My fishing buddy wants to look at outboards. He's tired of the old put the line on, tweak the settings, pull, hit Rat with the rope (ouch), tie the line on again, tweak again, pull, hit Rat with the rope again (ouch) and hope it starts this time.... 3hp motor he has.

DDR, Boat shows and RV shows are some of my favorite places to go for freebies. The only thing is that I took my son last time and now he is looking for a bass boat with a yellow sticker on it. Go figure.[pirate]
