Does anyone know if bear lake froze over?

I would settle for knowing whether or not the Utah State Park Marina is still open. I want to get the boat back up there on Saturday and perhaps Thursday.

We fished it yesterday.... 12-28. There were 3 other boats at the marina. There was ice everywhere in the marina when we launched. We found more smaller bands of broken ice out away from there. Ended up with 4,one 7lb cut and lost a big fish. We fished till dark and on the way back to the marina found alot of solid ice had formed while we were fishing. I broke ice for a few hundred yards getting back to the partially frozen marina. I would imagine this morning that if a big boat didn't go out today that it could be unfishable. I don't know that for sure. The ramp was ice and snow covered so we just chained up, so no problems there. It was the coldest day I've had my boat out on bear lake but it was a good day of fishing.....

Thanks for the report. Nice boat. I can see that fishing from your boat in the cold would be a lot warmer than fishing from my boat.

It appears you experienced a day similar to one we experienced last year. I have a hunch I won't be fishing from my boat at Bear Lake this week after all. [frown]

The water temps were 33 to 35 depending where we fished. I'm the last guy to want the lake to freeze but with the forecast calling for cold and no wind it might very well happen. The east side was still open as far as I could tell. Rainbow might be a safer bet. If I have some time I'll drive over and check the lake and give a report.....

Thanks, that would be great if you are able to do that.

From their website:

"Launch Ramps: Open – Marina, First Point, Cisco Beach, and Rainbow Cove.
Water depth at the end of the concrete at the Rainbow Cove launch ramp is @ 33″. Please use caution when launching larger boats at this location. Wave action is creating a drop off at the end of the concrete."

"Water Temp: 32.5 degrees as measured in the Bear Lake Marina."

I'm suppose to head up tomorrow, I know on saturday that ice had stacked against the outside of the marina pretty well, sounds like it hasn't moved much. I hope there's some wind tonight.

From what I am hearing today it is still fishable from the marina....

Easterly Winds blowing tonight 12/29 at around 7PM have stacked the mouth of the marina full of large ice chunks extending out into the lake for a distance further than my headlights could shine.......Its going to take a good push to get through it tomorrow, this morning was a struggle and it wasn't near as bad as it looks tonight. The marina is gaining more ice than ever, in fact the only open water is about 15 ft in diameter around the ice eaters.....

Every year there is a day the ice jams make the marina mouth impassable......usually it happens at night but I have been forced to pick up my boat at other launch ramps when there is a lot of ice floating in the lake, making marina mouth impossible to get through. Good luck all!
