My friend Mike invited me to go with him to Bear Lake today, and put me on this awesome Cutthroat! We had about given up on a place to launch the boat but finally got in on the water. It was a little dicey in a few spots, breaking through thin ice, but it paid off. It was my only fish of the day, but it was better than catching a lot of smaller ones. From the lookout, the lake looked about 50% capped.

Very nice cut!! I was impressed when I drove around to see most of the north end wide open, I saw you guys out soaking up the open water, hopefully the wind rips the rest of these open!

Congrats on a fine cutt. Where did you end up launching?

I'm with you rebel. Open Open Open.

FREEZE!!!! Calm with no wind is what i am wishing for.

FREEZE FREEZE FREEZE!!!!

You guys are funny. Whether frozen or not it should be great fishing.

True. But, it's a lot easier to walk on when it's frozen.

Nice fish but these conflicting reports of ice are very confusing. Did you launch at Cisco, first PT or rainbow? Did you troll or jig? Guess I need to take my toon and auger if I go so I won't be shutout. That sure is a pretty fish. Did you weigh or measure it? Thanks for the report. J

Travis, you're strange! Freeze baby freeze!
You'll probably get your wish though, it is supposed to be hovering around the 30 degree mark and some 10-15 mph winds tomorrow, so I'm not as hopeful for the ice as I was last week.
BTW, nice laker through the ice on your FB status!

We launched at Rainbow. We jigged, big tube jigs tipped with Cisco. We used a pearl and watermelon with green and red flecks. My friend caught two on the pearl and I caught one on the green. We didn't weigh or measure, just took pictures and put in back in the lake.

Nice fish!!! Its been nice to see that most of the big cutts that are being caught are wild, and theoretically, they are released and still swimming to spawn, pass on great genetics, and hopefully be caught again.
Most people would kill to catch a fish like that. In my opinion, they are the coolest fish in fresh water!! Unique fish in a unique body of water.

Thanks for the info and sounds like a fun day. Did you notice any Cisco schooled up off shore? Wonder if you could jig them on the east side before they hit the beaches. Later J

We didn't see any cisco.

That is a fine looking cutt. Very thick compared to some of the ones I have caught up there.
Thanks for sharing

So Mike what happened last night? More ice or is it blowing off???? Thanks J

Wow, great looking native cutt, thanks for sharing your report and pic with us, I bet that fish is at least 7 or 8 lbs.

It hasn't blown off at all. It was cold today and only hit the upper teens, so who knows, maybe we'll get the ice we want for the Cisco run.
It was pretty foggy over the lake today, but clear everywhere else away from the lake so I wasn't able to really see it well, but there were pressure ridges and some breaks down by the ideal beach and rock pile areas.

Thanks for the update Mike, if you get a chance keep us updated so we know whether to bring waders or ax's. I would like to see an ice year for the run. It's so much easier for the kids to have some fun. Been a long time since I jigged Cisco off the rock pile, but I loved doing that. Hope it's not between so we can't do either method very well. Anyway thanks so much for the update. Later J
