Thinking about going to Deer Creek to try out Perch fishing. Problem is I have never fished for perch before. Was wondering if any one had any pointers on what I should use for bait? Where is a good place to fish for Perch on Deer Creek? How deep should I Fish? Any suggestions would be helpful.

Thanks

Perch isn't too hard a fish to fish for. I would recomend Rockport. There are some good size perch coming out of there. As far as fishing for them ust a small hand tied jig, tip it with a wax worm and put some anchovie smelly jelly on it. Once you've caught your first perch, pop out the eyeball and use it or cut up some perch meat and put it on the end of your hook.

A couple suggestions -- go small with the hook and keep your bait within a couple inches from the bottom. If you can catch them at Deer Creek they will likely be larger than at most other places. Perch don't tend to be a free roaming fish, and will often be in large schools. If you aren't catching them where you are try another location, and often they will be found in deeper water than you would expect to catch trout. For where you are coming from, if you don't fish Deer Creek, Jordanelle would be your best bet. Remember that Deer Creek has special regulations on Perch -- "Yellow perch limit 10. All yellow perch caught must be kept from January 1 through April 30".

I have had good luck with 1 1/2" glow tube jigs and a piece of night crawler until you catch a perch and then use the tube jig with an eye. The perch fishing at Deer Creek is hit or miss right now. In the past the area around the Island has been pretty good. I have heard good stories about the perch this year, however I haven't been able to find them.

They stay close to the bottom, 6" to 2', so it is sometimes hard to see them on a cheap fishfinder. but normally if there are perch there they will bite.

Start in about 15' of water, drill a hole and if you don't get a bite in 5 to 10 minutes move out deeper. A lot of times you can tell that someone has been searching for perch by a string of holes about 15 to 20 feet apart from shallow water out

I use a jighead and a worm at Echo. We always get perch on that and then when we get tired of putting worms on we use the perch eye. It stays on real well.

KOKANEE,
I haven't seen anyone mention this, but keep it in mind. It's okay to go from Deer Creek to Jordanelle, but be carefull about going from Jordanelle to Deer Creek. If you have more than 10 perch in your possession from Jordanelle, and stop by Deer Creek, you'd be in violation of the law. You might talk your way out of the ticket, but then again, maybe not.

Good luck.
