Went up to deer creek on Saturday for a little trip to check it out. my dad and I started up by the island. Fished in about 10 fow near the island bank. Caught one small rainbow in the first 30 seconds, about 12-13 inches, healthy though. Ice was good about 6-8 inches. A little soft pocket down 2-3 inches but not slushy. The 5 or so different people I talked to around the island said they didn't catch anything.
So we packed up and moved to rainbow bay, by where the new zip line poles are at. Fished in about 20 fow. Ice was a bit slushy in spots, nothing too bad. Fished there for about an hour. Caught 2 rainbows almost back to back. The bigger one was a pretty nice little bow.
So since it was decent on 1/23, me and my buddy went back on Monday 1/25 to rainbow bay again. Weather was great. Fishing was slow. Caught 4 rainbows between 12-15" and fished from 9-3.
But the ice went from decent safe ice on Saturday to a whole different story Monday. Super slushy almost everywhere we walked. Bad enough that it would come up over your toes, about ankle deep. I was exploring around a little bit from our initial holes on our little spot of good ice when I took a step and the ice gave way under my leg and I went in up to my groin on one leg.
Luckily the hole wasnt quite bit enough or I would have went under. Was able to get climbed back onto safe ice quickly but it scared me pretty bad. After the scare, we stayed right on our little patch of good ice. Ice was about 8". A few inches of snow on top 2" of crappy ice on top of a 3" or so of water, then about 4-6" of good ice. The spot I broke through was just a few inches of snow on top of a couple inches of soft crappy ice/slush, then a large pocket of water and about 1/2" of ice under the water. Not enough to stand on obviously.
The edges were really bad. Ice was soft and broken up and we both got wet up to our knees getting onto the bank. I wouldn't recommend trying the ice at Deer Creek until it gets a bit colder for a spell. I attached a pic of the nicer bow from Saturday.
