Not that I care but I couldn't see when it is being held on the fliers.

"no shelters or augers allowed, holes are predrilled"

I could maybe see the ban on shelters but predrilled holes? That seems kind of lame, but to each their own. Hope its not too slushy for the contestants.

$40 to be told where and how to fish?

Knew that there was a reason that I don't frequent these things.

I met the guys putting this on last night up at Deer Creek. They were way cool- especially to my 5 year old. Gave him a hat and lure. Anyways, I think this is a fairly common way to hold derby's in the Midwest. I've seen photos of gridded off areas with holes pre drilled. I don't think this is about who knows the lake the best as much as it is about a level playing field and them being able to monitor the entire thing and it's probably not as hard on the fishery as a traditional derby. It sounded kind of like the single fly flyfishing competitions people have. I think it would be kind of fun to try. I certainly couldn't do worse than I did today in the quad, and I could fish anywhere I wanted and drill as many holes I could drill. I hope they have a good turn out and come back to Utah again, as it is part of a nationwide series.

I'm not sure that the guy in the center of the grid has the same opportunity as the ones on the perimeter. In order for a fish to reach the center of the grid, wouldn't it have to swim a gauntlet of hooks, lures, and lines?

This is how their done back east/ midwest, we here in Utah just aren't use to them. I think its a lot more fair then how we do tournaments. https://youtu.be/RXhswJ99gas

I agree that the guy in the center is at a diSadvantage for sure. These guys told me the holes were 27' apart and first come first serve. I don't even know if they are set up in grid. They also said it was heaviest fish wins, any specie. Maybe someone will win 3k on a big old trash fish. This could be a good opportunity with less competition because I know of at least two other derbies that day. I'll be at the quad at Rockport.

A grid on Deer Creek? I'm going to laugh my ass off if nobody catches anything. The rainbows in Deer Creek move around in schools usually. There could be a chance that a school may not even be in that area. Or maybe one guy in the corner will be closest to the school and be at an advantage to everybody else. It would make more sense in a place like mantua where it is one big bowl and the fish are more or less spread out along a uniform depth. But Deer Creek is one of the spottiest reservoirs in Utah...Are they going to chum the holes to guarantee fish are there?

I talked with a guy Saturday at Fish Lake that was handing out flyers on the tournament. I asked him if they thought this tournament was really going to work out for ice fishing the lake. I was told by a friend that lives in Heber, that the lake was being filled with water, and in most spots it was hard to get out on the ice, due to the edges pulling away from shore. The guy handing out the flyers looked at me puzzled and said there would be no problem with ice fishing it. He said it had 11" of ice on it. I don't think he listened to a word I told him about the lake. That's 2 weeks from now. What is the edges going to look like then? The tournament sounded fun until I read the flyer. NO SHACKS, NO AUGERS= NOT FOR ME. At least for me and my group. They may want to rethink their rules. I'm sure there will be a few people that are fine with the way its set up, and fish the tournament. I hope it all goes well for them. I hope they are able to access the ice and not have anyone fall through the edges.

The way I look at it. Don't dog it until you try it. Most people that don't win say the winners cheated anyways. I think its a good idea. It's all out in the open and let the best win. Shelters are nice to help keep the kids warm on them cold windy days.

Last thing I heard from this company or group of guys was that they were going to do it on Jan. 29th at Strawberry.. They must have changed it when they found out about the Fish Lake Tournament.. For that reason, I lost interest in it.. But now that it is later and on no other tournaments I am in, to this makes it way more interesting to try it even though I have never fished Deer Creek..

[#0000FF]Might have to build in an Olympic event or two...either long jump or pole vaulting onto the ice.

Sounds like as much fun as do-it-yourself root canal work...without anesthesia. What's next. No rods or reels?

One giant carp and you bring home 3k! Maybe I'll give it a try.
